If James demands his attention, and Remus hisrespect, Peter demands his care.
Or well, doesn't demand it -- not in his nature, to demand -- but he gets it anyway. There are few people in the world Sirius Black could be said to look out for, but Pete is most certainly one of them. Goodness knows that he can be cruel sometimes, or thoughtless, but Merlin help anyone else who is the same.
To see Sirius Black willingly give aid -- to see him give help that's not entirely selfish, that's not just given because he knows it will make things better for him -- one has to see Peter, too.
And it's not patronising, not really; he doesn't baby him, or coddle him, and there might be a fair few quips whilst the help is freely given, but Sirius will go out of his way to defend Peter or to raise him up or to help him make something better, because no one else is going to do it, except maybe Remus or James.
Careless he may be, and selfish, and brash, butSirius Black was an older brother before he evercame to this Castle, and he taught Reg the sameway he teachers Pete -- half by example and halfby blundering in, all insensitivity and a playfulpunch, and utterly failing to realise there might bemore subtle ways of helping out.
Go on, try telling Peter Pettigrew that he's bad at something. Sirius Black will be the one who helps him prove you wrong.
