Luke really loves Leia. It might have been in a romantic way in the beginning, but after he learns of their kinship, those feelings are diminished. He’s capable of loving her just as a friend and even more as a sister. The closeness was already there because he did indeed value and love her as friend before, so there really wasn’t much of a change in their relationship. The only thing that was different was that now he knew they really were family. He had a family, he wasn’t alone in the galaxy anymore. Leia’s always been the one that made him feel less alone, but that feeling was strengthened in some way.
(Even though at the same time, his being a Jedi puts himself at a distance from everyone else just on principle).
So what it boils down to is that Luke really cares about her a lot and would do anything to save her if he had to (evidenced quite well by his sudden rage toward their father during their battle on the second Death Star). Luke would be willing to give up his own life to keep Leia safe, and he does his best to be there for her when she needs it. He also has this thing about not wanting to burden her with his own problems, which is why some times he has the bad habit of clamming up even when she asks him what’s wrong. It takes a while for him to open up to her despite the fact that she’s one of the most important people in his life. But it’s sort of a protection from himself in a sense (especially after he finds out he’s Darth Vader’s son and doesn’t know about their connection—he doesn’t want to put that on her shoulders and he definitely doesn’t want to taint her with his own possible darkness—but even afterwards there’s a distance cause he doesn’t want to, like i said, lay his problems on her).
