Has anyone had experience training a shallow breathing alert? When My anxiety spikes I breathe very slowly and shallowly, and if it gets too bad I get lightheaded and then have a hard time catching my breath and it makes a scene as I have to take *really* huge deep breaths.
I was planning on training it by exaggerating it by holding my breath, and then signaling for a response. That’s essentially what I did for Arlo’s knuckle cracking alert, and he’s got that pretty much down (when he’s actually paying attention and not being lazy, we’re working on that too). Any suggestions or tips?
Well, I just had my first access issue because of Arlo. I went to VooDoo Doughnuts in Denver, and when I got to the front of the line so they could see me, an employee asked me for his certification. I told him there was no such thing, that certification cards were a scam, and that the laws said service dogs do not need ID. He helped another customer while I pulled up the ADA on my phone, and when I got up to the counter I showed him. I had two parts, one about not needing ID at all, and one that said service dogs can be in restaurants where the public is allowed to go, and state/health code laws don't matter because the federal law takes priority. He kept tripping over his words, saying it says they don't need to "wear" the ID but they need to have it, etc. Eventually I was finally able to buy my food, and the manager came out, told me that I could not come back with my dog without an ID.
Long story short, don't go to VooDoo Doughnuts in Denver, they will deny you access unless you have one of the scam ID. I'm planning on posting this on my personal facebook and service dog facebook groups to get the word out, and I would appreciate if if you guys would too, if you can.
I need help knowing what to write in an email to them. I'm planning on mentioning that the IDs are scams, and linking them to places where you can just buy them online, to prove that they're not actually issued by the government. I'm also planning on linking the ADA of course, and quoting the parts about not needing ID and being able to be in restaurants. Is there anything else people think I should include?
I'm thinking of training Arlo to bark at me to alert/disrupt dissociation when I'm driving. Does anyone have tips to train a task to only happen in a certain place, like in the car? Barking to alert in any other situation would be too disruptive I would think, but I need something strong to "snap me out of it" when I'm in a potentially dangerous situation like that, so I think a bark would be the most effective in a car. If it's not possible to train to alert only in one place or Arlo doesn't pick it up, does anyone have suggestions for other things to train for this that are less disruptive, but strong enough to bring me back to reality?
I brought Arlo with me to Walmart today!! He did so well, just sniffing a couple of things and pulling but he did AMAZING at ignoring people, he just looked at them. He did a tiny bark twice but that's because I was holding a treat and waited too long to give it to him and he got mad 😆
I'm freaking myself out again.... I honestly feel like I may just need an ESA, not an SD. Yes, there are tasks that can help me, but I don't *need * them in order to function. I'm alive, aren't I? and I haven't had an SD before now. People have been saying the tasks I'm trying to train aren't real tasks, and the thing that's been helping me the most is just having him with me so I know I'm not alone, but I know that's not a task either.
From what I've heard, I'm not even training DPT right... for me it's just comforting for Arlo to lay on me, but apparently it *has* to be on pressure points for it to be considered DPT. Same thing with alerting to people walking behind me, I don't need him to do something to alert to it, I just need him to look at them, because I'm pretty much always watching him. Let alone the fact that people are saying DPT when prompted isn't a task. They're saying that he has to do it without a command when my anxiety symptoms increase....
I'm just so confused and upset. The only things I need that are truly tasks are mobility tasks that I can't train Arlo to do yet, because he's still growing. I just don't know what to do... am I faking? do I just need an ESA? I freak out like this every other week but it just keeps happening, and I'm sick of it. I just wish I knew for sure that the things I'm training Arlo are legitimate and I'm not just making this all up and convincing myself I need an SD.
Would it be appropriate to use a guide handle/pull strap type of thing on Arlo, considering he's still growing? I wouldn't really be putting any pressure on it, it would mainly be for my own security and peace of mind, knowing that if my balance gets bad he's right there. I've noticed that I'm not as comfortable as i would like to be when just holding the leash.
In addition to that, if I do end up buying a handle, would it still be best to keep him on leash as well, like a hands free one?
