Katie Sinback, Film, authored the short story “Beautiful Blur,” published in the December issue of Anti-Heroin Chic.

On the morning of my grandmother Delle’s funeral, the vestibule of Grace Episcopal reeked of overbaked lilies-of-the-valley and the onion-tinged funk of armpits.  A few times I choked back the rise of bile in my throat at the assault of smells.  The air conditioning was on the fritz again. The minister, his face pink and tight like a balloon, apologized to Aunt Kat over and over again.  “Sorry for your loss” battled  “Sorry for the broken air conditioner” for the most useless apology of the day.  Aunt Kat, her hair pulled back in a bulletproof salt-and-pepper bun, breezed by him, nodding in response, but not stopping.  Never stopping.  She had been in perpetual motion since she, with her family in tow, stepped through our door the day after Daddy found Delle.

Amy Borden, Film faculty, authored “Mary Pickford Meets the Mafia,” published in A Companion to the Gangster Film, editor George Larke-Walsh, Wiley-Blackwell, 2018.

This chapter examines the early sound gangster films produced during the transition to sound film from 1928‐1930 and their contribution to the development of an urban soundscape that becomes a staple feature of the genre. The part‐talkie film Weary Riverprovides an example of the transitional figure of the early sound period and how visual and aural delivery attempted to convey the emerging middle‐class model of criminality. The use of off‐screen dialogue and sound effects to enhance the diegetic space in Voice of the City contributed to its further application in the early sound gangster film during its expressionist phase of development. The period 1930‐1931 saw more refined technical developments of the sound‐on‐film process and the end of the “novelty” of the talking film. The film, Lights of New York's emphasis on dialogue, rather than action, showcases the use of criminal argot with its stress on slang expressions and billingsgate.
