After a successful haul at the clothes store, Sepal expressed a desire for a refreshing drink. Amused, Kate watched him strut around in his new leather jacket, preening in every reflective surface he came across.
It suited him, she had to admit.
"One Shirley Temple for me, and a virgin Pina Colada for my friend, please."
"Coming right up!" replied the bartender, aiming curious glances at Sepal. Walden didn't get many visitors, so new faces tended to stick out. Especially if they were green.
"Are these drinks traditional?"
"I'm not sure if traditional is the right word, but...you could say they're commonly served in places like this, yeah. Usually, they're made with alcohol, but -"
"Oh! Let's have some of those!"
"Um...It's only 10 am, Sepal. On Sim Earth, it's considered bad form to start drinking before noon. Unless you're on vacation; then it doesn't count."
"Fascinating! Once we're done, can we go see a - what's it called - a play? I read there are places where people dress up in strange costumes and give performances on a stage."
"Uhh, that's...we don't have a theater in Walden, I'm afraid."
This guy sounds like he's fresh from another planet, the bartender thought as he mixed the drinks.
"Besides, I have to get back home in another hour or so. I have a video conference scheduled for work."
"Well, yeah - money doesn't fall out of the sky, you know. You earn it in exchange for services rendered."
"I do know that, it's just that I've never had much reason to worry about money before. We're largely a post-scarcity society and most things are simply available whenever somebody needs something."
Oh shit, he really is from another planet!
Ignoring the bartender's eavesdropping, Kate thought it the right moment to drop a gentle hint:
"Once your immigration status has been resolved, you'll need to think about getting a job too. AIOS and I can help you figure out what you want to do, or there are unemployment offices where you can ask."
"Oh. Oh, I see. Well, of course..."
Kate wanted to support him, but he couldn't live in her garage forever. Sooner or later, he'd have to find a way to support himself in their scarcity-abundant society.
