August 22nd is at hand, which means it’s time for us to come to a decision on whether we’re adding a plethora of amazing features, or we go forward and finish the product and polish what’s there with the assets we have. More after the image!
We - all of us - you included, gave it a good college try, but Early Access did not make enough to financially justify the time, energy, and costs. If I may put you all in my shoes for a minute: This production cost around $50k to make. $14k from Kickstarter, and the rest from my stint at retail and commissions. When our programmers and artists are overwhelmed, I did what I physically could myself. Just yesterday, I worked from the first post Liz appeared all the way until 2PM EST without getting any sleep. Due to said efforts, Early Access 2.0 comes with more animations, polish, subtitles, fixes, a less talkative Xanamae, voice acting, and visuals. This may all sound like a rehash for you, but I think it’ll help really bring down the next sentence all the more:
After 4 years of working days like today and spending thousands, my projected earnings for August after all the revenue splitting is... $160.
That’s stressful news, but not completely bad or unexpected. Not only are many, many, many people waiting for full release, but Steam’s main sales are from full releases. This is due to Steam only showing games on the front page after it leaves Early Access. So we are all but guaranteed to receive more money in September. However, all that said, we’re going to finish up what we have and call it a production.
Financial reasons aside, it’s been incredibly stressful asking the artists and programmers to push onward for 4 years. I want them to have a break, and I also sort of want a break. Did you know I’m still in Critical Role Series 1 episode 48? Or that my copy of Cuphead hasn’t been touched? It’s been that kind of 4-year production. It’s time to call it.
Now don’t get me wrong, upon full release, we’ll provide some great updates afterwards! And we will add backer-specific content as free DLC, but, as far as official production work goes past that? It’s all reliant on the full release sales.
Thank you all so much for making this journey as stress-free as possible.
