Evaluation: Public Presentation

For this project, I worked on the online presence for Rotate Magazine and my own photography business. With Rotate Magazine, I had to to start from the beginning with using social media. I had to create a new account for the magazine. I started to create my own audience by following accounts that I thought would be interested in our magazine. These accounts were sustainable fashion influencers, vintage and second hand stores all across Bristol and Weston-Super-Mare. The more I followed and liked the images on those accounts, the more they followed and we had a audience. This helped carve the audience we are targeting at. We can not control who is our audience to a certain extent, however we can influence and specialise what information we share to the public to gain a specific audience. 

I think our magazine will inspire many people as there is not many sustainable fashion magazines out there. Rotate.Magazine is unique. We have put two major subjects together, fashion and sustainability. These will appeal to a huge audience as the sustainable factor is a relatable issue that is going on in the world. We have created a successful Instagram page, which has reached 153 followers and counting. I believe this will expand as soon as the physical copies of the magazines get rotated around Bristol and its surrounding areas. 

Having the magazine available online, has made the process more ethical. We have reduced the printing copies to support this. Because of the Corona Virus, our public presentation plans were affected the most. There is no social gatherings or stores available to share our work. Therefore the plan to have a launch night and exhibition for the magazine, was unable to go ahead. However that did not stop us launching. I believe that we have done really well to get the magazine launched on time and got out there to the public. We were lucky to have the option of posting the magazines out to share it with the public. 

After lockdown, the plan is to distribute the magazines to lots of locations. I plan to distribute mine to many fashion shops across Bristol. There is many vintage, sustainable and charity stores with Bristol. I know there is many up Park Street and  a few places in Clifton. The aim is to put them in the stores I have contacted or know that are open in Bristol. This will be a great way to show the magazine to the public. Bristol is a very busy area and lots of people will be able to come across our magazine. Of course we will do this after lock down and when all the stores are open back up. It has been a pain as we will have to wait for the magazine to be seen by majority of people. However it will happen so we have to just be patient. I am looking forward to getting the magazines out further to the public, since we have had an amazing response so far.

The launch went really well. We both did the website and Instagram posts on time together. Our responses were very good, many people gave us a shoutout over social media to promote it more! We were pleased to get some new businesses we have not heard of, wanting to get involved in the next issue of Rotate.Magazine. This is rewarding but we are unsure whether we are carrying on the magazine together. I think we both adapted really well to the situation and did not let it stop us from launching the magazine. People know it will be coming in stores, they just have to wait until it is safe to be near each other again. 

I believe social media has been the key element to get our Magazine out there to the public. The online version allows anyone to read Rotate.Magazine. Having a physical copy is not the same but we will get them out there when it is safe too. We hope this will bring more interest once the copies are spread around. I believe we will reach our targeted audience by the particular shops and stores, we put the magazines in.

As for my business, it is slowly expanding. I have updated my portfolio which is available through a pdf file. I hope to print a book of the portfolio in the future, however I believe my work will be constantly updated with new stronger work. Therefore a printed version may not be useful if it is being changed often.   I will continue to update my social media to influence and attract my audience. My audience is already there, I just need to expand and attract more people. I will continue to share my online portfolio to fashion brands and stores. I will aim to gain work in the fashion industry. I believe having a updated website will help my business look more professional. It is a great way to share my work as I am showing the range of work I can do. My website shows the main types of photography I do, not just fashion work. I believe showing your best work to the public, can boost your paid jobs and opportunities. 

I know and understand what I need to do to boost my business social media. I need to be more active.I believe I can increase my following by engaging with my audience and other accounts. I can do this by commenting, liking and giving shoutouts to accounts to increase my exposure. This all will be done over time, I have decided not to blog this as I have done this before and successfully. It is a matter of updating and adding more images. I will bring my full attention to my business now uni is coming to an end. I felt like my Uni work was more important at the time.

Website for Rotate.Magazine

The website we purchased, was used for a page where you can download a copy of the Rotate.Magazine. You can access the website by simply  searching www.rotatemagazine.co.uk or the physical copy of the magazine has a QR code. This code leads straight to the website. Before the launch, the website was ready but did not put it live. We did not want people to see it before the launch. 

On the 1st of May. we launched the magazine, therefore launched the website. The website shows the front cover of the magazine, with a download button. This allows you to view the magazine and download a PDF file too.

This is the main way of seeing the magazine at the moment. We tested the QR code and website before the launch. By doing so, eliminates any problems we have on the launch day. Having our own website with the magazine available allows the public to view our work.

RPS & Artspace Instagram Takeovers.

Takeover 1: Royal Photographic Society, Bristol.

The Royal Photography Society is a International Organisation committed to promoting photography and supporting photographers. RPS is based in Bristol. Their aim is to increase the knowledge and understanding of photography. They promote the highest standards of achievement in photography. They have 11,000 members and a 35.5k following on Instagram.

I am a member of the RPS and have visited the Gallery lots of times for their exhibitions. Myself and Chloe had a Instagram takeover on their account. We sent 5 images each so that it would be spilt to be fair between us. Chloe and I wrote a bio about the magazine and ourselves. 

I shared our Instagram hashtags so that the images they shared, would be under them and our own #rotagemag too. We got 231 likes!  We got two comments saying it is a cool idea and good luck. I believe this is a great response. I have never had much more than 120 likes on my Instagram so 231 is amazing. 

By the RPS, sharing our images and tagging our Instagram account, gives us lots of exposure to their audience. It also looks good that a well known big organisation is promoting our magazine. They are giving us support. 

This takeover is a great way to present our work to the public. It gives exposure to Rotate Magazine, my business and Chloe’s photography account. 

Take over 2 : Artspace Weston-Super-Mare

I got offered to do another Instagram takeover. I sent the same bio that is in my website. I sent 9 images of a range of my images. I am waiting for them to share my work, however they have only just finished the first years. My work will not be shown until after the hand in. It is still great to get my work shared still.

Portfolio Update 1 & 2:

I believe a great way to show your work to clients or companies, is by creating a portfolio. The copy below is an online pdf. When I create a pdf, I use a word document and lay out my images. I like to put the images in a particular order, so that they look good and work well together. After I have created the portfolio and am happy with the layout. I export the word document into a pdf file. This just compresses the file and makes It easier to view the document too. It looks like it is viewed as a book. I use the pdf file to send to potential clients who I want to work with. I think it is a good way to present your work as all your best images are In one document. The portfolio shown below has been printed professional from an online website called Snapfish. I like to have a physical copy too as it Is nice to look through when I have an interview or when I am showing my work. 

I will continue to create portfolios as I enjoy doing so and believe they look professional.

I wanted to create a magazine/ lookbook as my portfolio. I feel like my style of images work well with the overview look of the portfolio. If I had more of a budget (money) , I would like to create a high quality book from Blurb or Papier etc. These are professional high standard which look and are expensive.

However Snapfish was good quality for the price. The book should of been £20 or so but luckily I managed to get a discount code for the total being just under £16. Including delivery. I wanted the book to have same photo layout throughout. This makes it consistent and easy to follow. The front cover has my business logo shown. I feel like I did not want to limit myself to just show one image and hint that it is more important than the others. Also my logo is my identity too so I think it looks more professional, The white space work well with the logo too.

Inside, there is text of my name and instagram handle too. This is my main social media platform. I made sure I had my font and font colour matching my logo. I did this by picking a dominant colour of my logo. 

The main aim in my portfolio is for the images that are together to be matching. Either by the colour tones, patterns or colour scheme. This can be done by a colour repeating itself through both images. Can be a small part of that colour but it’s important to link the images together on a double page spread.

Or matching a suggestion of the same movement shown, same position… Linked by direction of pose or direction of other objects apparent. It is important to have the images benefiting each other, they need to work together as a pair. I also tried to have particular images to help with the flow of the book. For example, a model walking towards the end of the page, hint to turn the page.

Updated Portfolio:

I decided to go through my portfolio and replace a lot of the images as I have improved so much more than having old images which will not do a-lot. I had an idea of including older work which is strong and will always be included. My family work is strong but it will not be included as that does not represent who I am as a photographer. 

I updated this portfolio first but then I realised I missed some images from my initial project. I wanted to include them as they are recent and have a different model to vary the work shown. Most of the images are the same as before but I have just updated some images to recent work. Shown below.

I was happy with this one but I think I could add more work and new models that isn't there. I felt like there was multiple images of the same model which does not look great when your showing a range of work. Once I add a few more different images, this will improve the range even more.

 Therefore I updated the portfolio for the last time! Shown after the one below.

Updated Portfolio 2: Final One

This is the final portfolio. It is slightly different from the one above. I added in images from the Initial Project and Major Project. All these images I have chose are my favourites and images I feel are strong. I have a connection with the images, therefore I believe someone else will. I think the images show my style and personality too. There is a range of work from previous projects. I have tried to make the two images on the page match in some way. I believe using the colours to match, make the layout seem more aesthetically pleasing. 

I will mention about one of the images being a male model. I do shoot with males but not often at all. I do not mind shooting with them but my clients and models I usually shoot with are female. I was thinking of removing the male image as I shoot women mainly. However I think the image is very good with how the angle looks and I did not want to remove it. I think the image opposite works well with the other, as the angles and colours match well. I decided to keep the male image in as it shows that I am willing to work with both males and females. I wanted to address this as I knew it would be brought up. 

Overall, I am very happy with the look of my portfolio as it shows a range of work with a variety of locations and models. I have included all of the up to date work that I want to show. I believe it is important to keep you portfolio updated as you do not want to show work that no longer represents you. I always add a credit page at the back as it is important to me, to credit the model or brand where possible. This shows my professionalism as a photographer. Of course, I had to update the credit page too as layouts changed and they may of changed their Instagram account too. 

IN THE FUTURE.... I will continue to update and change my portfolio when I feel it is necessary. I may create one for the other styles of photography I shoot. Fro example, child photography/model headshots. This is an option I am considering but it is shown on my website.

Funding Update:

After the Presentation:

Myself and Chloe practiced the presentation in a class room. We decided to take turn in saying certain slides and chunks of text. That way it would be fair that we both would be speaking the same amount of time. We went through the presentation a few times before we had the meeting. About 15 minutes before, Sam got an email saying that she was unable to come that morning but could come in the late afternoon. We had an issue as I had a photoshoot in Bristol in the afternoon, for the magazine. I couldn’t cancel the photoshoot as it was too late and I had to make the most of the weather. I felt awful for not being there but I needed to take time to travel and do the photoshoot. Chloe was very brave and did the presentation by herself. She was amazing and did it! I really appreciated Chloe taking this on by herself. We did not wanted to delay the meeting as we needed the money asap to start planning how we would print the magazine.

Chloe said it went well and they asked a few questions. We waited for a response for about a week. We got a conference call from Ross and Jamie saying that it has been accepted to get funded. However they would only give us £600 out of the £1,000. This means that I would get £300 and Chloe would get the other £300. Of course we wanted the full amount but due to the circumstances with corona, that was a perfect amount. We were unable to do a launch night or a exhibition , therefore the £600 was the right amount the get the copies of the magazine printed. We did not need the rest of the money as our plans were canceled due to the Corona Situation. The focus was getting the magazine printed. By having the money to print, means we can save time as we would of had to make the magazine ourself. Also companies and any models that were involved now can have a copy of the magazine.

Myself and Chloe were very happy to have received the funding as it opened so much more possibilities we could not afford to do before.

Social Media Review: Online Presence for my business & rotate. magazine.

For this post, I am going to create two social media audits. One for my business account and the other for the magazine account. An ‘audit’ is simply the process of hunting down all of your company's Social Channels and compiling key information about each account, all in one place. I will do this by thinking about my goals for each account and evaluate whether my existing strategy is working. 

Things to check:

1) Profile and Cover Images- all match, incorporate your current brand logo.

2) Bio/Profile Text- You have limited space to work with in a social media bio, so it is important to make the most of it. Make sure fields are filled in completely  and accurately with current brand messaging. I need to check if information is still relevant and up to date. Make sure any dates are updated too. 

3) Identify  your best posts- look for the top three posts. Evaluate for nay patterns you may spot with likes and the image. Do people respond better on Instagram or Facebook?

4) Evaluate social media analytics. Instagram and Facebook has a setting page where you can view the performance of the account. 

5) Understand my audience and the network. If I evaluate my account, I can understand who my channel reaches.

Instagram Analysis: 

Profile visits: 35 accounts in the last week. I intend to boost this number by posting and engaging more. I have not posted in a while due to being too busy with uni work. However my followers has barely changed so they have stayed loyal. Here are some insights from my Instagram Account:

Results are:

-Top locations are UK, Bristol. Makes sense as this is where I am based.

-Age group, 18-24 year old

-Females.

I found these insights are really helpful as it tells me my audience. It tells me information about my followers that allows me to give them what they desire or expect. I post to influence my target market. This market is what I have created by unique style of photography. Also it gives me information of areas that I need to engage more with. For example, I have more of male followers than I thought, this makes me think of creating more content for the male viewers. I could do this by posting or photographing more males, therefore they have something to relate too.

Top 3 Instagram Posts:

I tried to use websites that is specifify what instagram posts are your most liked. I think it did not work as my account is a business account. Instead, I took the time and looked through all my posts to find the top 3 liked images. Below is those top 3, first one with 121 likes, second is 110 and third 109 likes. I believe the reason for this is that the model is a social media influencer, therefore the exposure was higher due to their high following. However the second image is not a well known model but in fact the image was popular. This makes me think my actual image got the likes instead of the model. I should not think like that but the person in the image does impact the amount of likes and exposure you get for each image.

People respond better on my Instagram as it is my main social media platform.

Facebook Insights:

These insights are not as detailed as Instagram. I can find out about my 5 most recent posts. Also it can categorise where I am to other photography pages. There is a option to boost my page but it cost money. Depends on how many you want to view, the higher views, the more expensive it is. I prefer to use Instagram as it has more specific insights that helps me benefit my audience needs.

Rotate. Magazine Account:

Instagram followers: 64

For the Instagram insights, the account needs to have at least 100 followers to get them. We are currently on 64 followers so we can not get the insights. If we get to 100, then I can evaluate our insights but for the time being I can not. Our social media is fairly new but we can gain a few followers! We have finished posting some images for now as we will launch the magazine next. Below shows our Instagram.

UPDATE: After sharing on social media and inviting lots of people to follow our account. We have reached over 100 followers! Now we can view the insights and see our business statistics. Below shows these results: It is interesting to see that 45% is Bristol audience and only 2% is Weston!

Plans forward:

-keep active so the account does not get lost and unseen.

-engage with other accounts, create stories etc.

- share peoples tags and mentions of the magazine.

-advertise the magazine!!!

Facetime Photoshoot Adaption Reflection.

In this photoshoot, I worked with Rafaella Ponce, who is a social media influencer in Portugal. I have been speaking to her for a while to try and arrange a photoshoot. She is really busy with social media events to help advertise businesses or products. However coming up with a FaceTime photoshoot was more successful as she had some free time to be a model. It was more flexible as she did not have to travel anywhere and just needed to get ready. We arranged a day and a time, I wanted to make sure with had a free afternoon incase we had any glitches. I started using my laptop to FaceTime Rafaella. I took multiple shots but the quality was not as good as it could of been. I thought the quality would improve if I used my phone and I was correct.

On the phone, a screenshot without myself being in the picture. It took some time to get the right angle and frame in the shoot. Rafaella had to move and tilt the phone to get the correct look. I had to tell her which way to move it. She had to use different objects to prop the phone. She used home objects such as baskets, chairs and toilet roll. We had to use what was available to us.

We focused on one corner of her bedroom as it was plain and had some mirrors for detail. We wanted to keep it plain so it would look like a studio setting. There was three looks, each outfit was styling the blazer. We looked at the mood-board I made and worked from the images. Rafaella was very good at  posing. She listened well to me directing her to stay inside the frame.

We had so much fun during the photoshoot as it was very different to my usual photoshoots. Once we got use to photographing this way, we were able to work quick and develop the shots through better poses. I took many screenshots as some images may be blurred or glitchy. In total, I took over 300 images, many were motion blurred or the face was not quite right. They were already in Jpeg. I edited them in Lightroom. My main aim was to sharpen the image as much as possible, by adjusting the sharpness and clarity.

Overall, this photoshoot was a lot more successful than I imagined. They look like they were shot in the studio. I did not expect anything more as it was a screenshot from a phone. Also it shows how I have adapted to the current situation with corona. This will make an interesting section in the magazine as it  is relevant to all viewers. Next time ,I would make it more interesting and more locations around the house or in the garden. I would also experiment with more angles with camera. I felt like I did experiment with some angles as I tried a selfie look and shooting from the floor. Meaning the phone was not the floor and the model was close up. Since it was my first photoshoot, we managed to get lots of good images that were successful. 

One of our peers in our class picked up on that the FaceTime Photoshoot was really interesting and loved the layout of that section too. We asked for some feedback and that is what Libby replied with.
