i don't believe conformitygate, but if the idea strikes you at all, then you NEED to watch I Saw the TV Glow (2024). it's so good. it ripped my heart out (in a good way?? but simultaneously in a devastating, horrifying way.)

so the thing about the coming out scene is that it feels like it was written in 2014? like i was 8 in 2014 but what i mean is that it seems like it's less about will as a person and more about trying to convince audience members that being gay is normal. i'm not mad about that message, it's true, but i am mad that it took precedent over the character arc. like, was will really thinking about how to convince people that being gay is fine all those years? no. he was stewing in self hatred and experiencing like 200 traumas.
also i think so many people were there because the writers didn't think allocating time for more than one coming out scene was important enough (since irl you do it over and over and over). which i find sad.
