Woe, pufflings upon ye!

Kids and senior citizens alike rally to rescue beloved young seabirds that have lost their bearings.
But on their first flight after leaving the burrow, some young birds get confused by the lights of the town and head inland instead of out to sea. Puffins are amazing swimmers, able to dive up to 200 feet deep, thanks to bones that are dense—unlike the light, airy bones of most birds. But that makes it harder for them to take flight. At sea, the water provides a runway; in the colonies, they can launch from cliffs and catch a breeze. When pufflings land on the streets, however, their new wings are too weak to get them aloft from the flat ground, leaving them vulnerable to cars, predators and starvation.
That’s where Sigrún Anna and Rakel come in. They’re part of the Puffling Patrol, a Heimaey volunteer brigade tasked with shepherding little puffins on their journey. Every year during the roughly monthlong fledging season, kids here get to stay up very late. On their own or with parents, on foot or by car, they roam the town peeking under parked vehicles, behind stacks of bins at the fish-processing plants, inside equipment jumbled at the harbor. The stranded young birds tend to take cover in tight spots. Flushing them out and catching them is the perfect job for nimble young humans. But the whole town joins in, even the police.

Light pollution confuses and disorients seabirds around the globe, luring them towards land — and potentially dangerous situations. In the Westman Islands off the southwest coast of Iceland, however, one community has banded together to save lost young puffins.
Every spring, hundreds of thousands of Atlantic puffins come to the archipelago to breed. Mere meters from the nearby town, they dig burrows in the cliffs and raise their young, known as “pufflings.” Biologists Erpur Snaer Hansen and Lucas Canas study the newest residents of the local puffin population, but they’ve noticed a concerning pattern.
When it is time for pufflings to leave the burrow, thousands of them are drawn by the lights of the town rather than flying out to sea. Once on the ground, they become trapped and risk starvation. In response, the community goes on “puffling patrol” every night during puffling season. They scour the streets for lost pufflings and bring them to the Puffin Rescue Center, where Kim Cupples and her team perform a health check. The townspeople bring healthy pufflings back to the cliffs of the island and use a unique method to return them to safety: throwing them out to sea.
Baby puffins are called pufflings. #FACT
Today I was reminded that baby Puffins are called Pufflings. And that's just a lovely thing to know.
Random but fun fact of the day,
In Iceland it’s normal to throw pufflings off cliffs. This is not to kill them, but to help them. Pufflings use the moon to navigate but because of the city lights they sometimes get lost.
The people from Iceland then go on a puffling partol in the city to search for the baby puffins.
(Pufflings are baby/young puffins)
And they looks like this
