ai has risen to power in fandom spaces because of new fans being nervous to express themselves and be fans that's it send tweet
i'm going to be very vulnerable, and please finish the post after this admission, but i used to use ai to roleplay. character ai had just released, i didn't know much about it, yadda yadda yadda. i feel very guilty. but now, especially with all of these shapes.inc ads or whatever trying to pull me into ai roleplay relapse, i ask myself why?
it hindered my fandom experience, it was kind of boring and i was constantly mad at it for misunderstanding things. so why did i still use it?
especially with shapes.inc, it's clear that these people don't NOT like fandom. they really like it. ai is a supplement to their fandom because they feel some sort of intimidated by putting fanworks into the space. there's a deeper conversation to be had on why.
the reason, i think i used it anyway, was that it felt safe.
we've made such a mockery of ocs in fandom space that even thinking about using your oc with another person makes people feel squeamish. is it a mary sue, is it a hyper manic pixie, is it just a stupid emo character, etc? the stupid AI bot probably wouldn't even know it wasn't from the franchise, so it would be better to play with that. there is a really bad RP drought for ocs IN GENERAL right now.
character compliance isn't an issue because you're the only one in the fandom seeing it if you butcher someone's character in order for something to happen. i know a lot of perfectionistic types that keep things to themselves because they aren't sure that it's accurate enough. those types might go to these sorts of things where they won't be judged.
unless your fanwork is "good art", it's wattpad fiction or looked down upon. or, it's barely even noticed. and that can be discouraging for some people. i'm not saying every fanwork has to have a bajillion likes, i'm just saying that a lack of commenting, reblogging, kudos-ing, etc. in these spaces make for a drier experience overall.
i'm not saying all people do this and i'm not saying that this is anyone's fault in particular, but i am saying that i think this is why a lot of people are turning away from these spaces right now and into the hands of something like that.
PLEASE discuss under this post, i'm very interested.
also just to reiterate: ai bad, don't use that. ai very bad. what i'm trying to deduce is why ai is in fandom space, and what we can do to fix it as fans.
