Greenhouse x Pusateri’s Sitting in a Tree
UPDATED: Friday, November 18th, 2:05pm EST
We have something to tell you. It’s kind of a big deal. Maybe you should be sitting down for this. Here, let us pour you a glass of Gold Rush; the ginger will help you digest the news. Comfy? Ready? Okay. Here it goes.
You know how we announced earlier this year that we opened a shop in Sherway Gardens, inside the Saks Food Hall by Pusateri’s Fine Foods? Well, that’s not the only thing that’s been going on between us and Pusateri’s. We’ve been hanging out for a while. The truth is, we get along really well, we like each other a lot, and-- we’re having sextuplets.
That’s right, we’re building out six mini Greenhouses inside each of the existing and soon-to-come Pusateri’s locations. (What did you think we meant?)
As any shopper who has been fortunate enough to peruse the aisles of Pusateri’s—cart laden with juicy B.C. cherries, white raspberries, and Blackbird sourdough—can attest, this 59-year-old business is unlike any other in Toronto. While it is known for its luxurious products, excellent prepared foods, and impeccable customer service, Pusateri’s is at heart a family-operated business.
Let’s go back to the very beginning for a moment. The Pusateri story starts in 1957, when a young man by the name of Cosimo Pusateri arrived in Canada from Sicily with his parents and sister. Six years later in 1963, the Pusateri family opened a produce market on St. Clair West, with 12-year-old Cosimo unloading fruits and vegetables, shelving goods, and serving shoppers. From this young age, Cosimo dedicated himself to the store, training as a butcher before eventually taking over operations in 1986.
It was under the leadership of Cosimo Pusateri that the brand was transformed from “small, Italian neighbourhood shop” into the fine-foods emporium you know and love today. Cosimo had a keen appreciation for fine foods, importing items like caviar from the Caspian Sea, and bringing Godiva chocolates to Toronto way before they were popular. But he also took an interest in every customer who came into his shop, treating all like old friends. It is his spirit that continues to guide Pusateri operations today.
As you know if you’ve visited us at Sherway, Pusateri’s has partnered with Saks Fifth Avenue to develop a gourmet grocery experience within their Toronto stores. Like the Harrods Food Hall in London or La Grande Epicerie at Le Bon Marché in Paris, the first first Saks Food Hall by Pusateri’s in Sherway Gardens is an opulent space featuring both traditional grocery aisles and nine unique food stations.
The second Pusateri’s Food Hall in Saks Fifth Avenue, complete with a a Vegetable Butcher, a Custom Parfait Counter and Chopped Salad Bar, and a plant-based pâtisserie, is now open at Yonge and Queen.
The revitalized flagship at Avenue and Lawrence has also reopened its doors following a devastating fire last summer. The new store has everything beloved neighbours adored about the iconic store, plus more. (Like us! Our full juice fridge and Superfood Smoothie Station is located near the produce, naturally.)
