This morning I helped clean up the My Lay Yone skatepark after a video production company came and shot a beer promotion two days ago and left confetti and huge ply boxes everywhere. They said someone would come and pick them up yesterday though no one came. It's another example of people not taking care of their own and thinking it's OK to push responsibility onto others. It makes me think of all the rubbish skaters in Australia leave behind at parks and spots. I've always hated it from an environmentalist viewpoint but it also shows how much privilege is held to not think twice about the council picking it up for them. An exploitation of privilege. The diy skateparks I get to visit are incredible for so many reasons, but also because it lets true independence shine. Built by and for skaters in the shortest period of time but then also managed into the future by skaters. They take pride in the space because they know how lucky they are to have it. Before they skate every morning they sweep the park and pick up rubbish. That's how it should be everywhere. Showing gratitude and love for something that is such a big part of our lives.
