thinkin' about how qifrey's eye is light-sensitive and how olruggio's specialty is light
finished volume five of witch hat atelier and i adore how qifrey can really go from aurafarming to aurafailing, ominous to sparkly-eyed in like, seconds. man has range
okay so! witch hat prediction time. gonna try to put on my thinking cap for this one. (disclaimer: i have only read up to volume five + the kitchen spinoff. no spoilers please!)
Qifrey definitely has something funky going on with his right eye. it's always covered by hair plus those glasses AND when Coco reaches towards his face, he, who has previously been shown to be kind and caring with children, slaps her hand away. rather out of character!
during this arc, it has constantly been mentioned that absolutely no exceptions can be made when it comes to magic cast by the Brimmed Caps. even magic that is unwillingly tattooed onto skin will result in having your memory wiped by the Knights Moralis. this is heavily emphasized.
Easthies of the Knights Moralis keeps going on and on about how there can be "no exceptions made," and that even a single exception will cause the collapse of the world, or something. but, he repeats this like, every time i see him, which in turn makes me think that he might've made an exception at one point and it came back to bite him in the ass. or maybe he's just really devoted to his job of *being* an ass idk.
Qifrey's avoidance of showing his right eye, his seemingly-personal revenge quest (or something) against the Brimmed Caps (that he is not letting anyone else in on and and how he is avoiding telling the Knights Moralis about clues to the Brimmed Caps), the illegality of seals being drawn on people, and Easthies' nonstop rants makes me think that perhaps the Brimmed Caps tattooed a seal on his eye or surrounding area...? and Easthies found out and gave him a pass, regretted it, but couldn't change his mind because he'd be seen as complicit.
if i'm right, i wonder what the seal would be, because i really have no idea. seal that makes you aurafail double the amount that you aurafarm, seal that glues a turtleneck to your flesh, seal that does jack but is still illegal cause it's there, seal that causes your bones to dissolve from the inside out, seal that just shortens your lifespan to a quarter of what it was originally, seal that uhhh i'm running out of ideas makes you wear a toga over a turtleneck okay now i'm just critiquing his fashion sorry qifrey.
(second-guessing myself now) idk maybe his eye isn't connected to his quest for the Brimmed Caps but i am excited nonetheless to find out his motivations for hunting them.
qifrey is rotating in my head like a marketable plushie in a microwave.
i also love how qifrey's whole demeanor changes when he's interacting with children versus adults. with children, he wants to give them a place to both learn and fail safely. whereas with adults, he is more, idk, wary?
this leads me to think that when he was a child, perhaps he didn't have that safe place to learn and fail, and he wants current children to have what he couldn't
allowed myself to see the character for the first time in like 3 days and almost started crying?? dont know what that's about
