6:50 am, 10 minutes before I get off work, I switch the tv to MTV and there’s See You Again and I die in F&F and QM feels.
24 hours in the life of Zain:
3 PM: breakfast
highkey procrastinating, walking the dog, lowkey writing
8 PM: lunch
lowkey procrastinating, walking the dog, highkey writing
2 AM: dinner
writing af, drinking caffeine, wishing the grocery store was open
5 AM: going out to watch the sunrise (off nights) 7 AM: going home (work nights)
8 AM: zzzzzzz
I think going out to watch the sunrise at 5am on my nights off is gonna be a thing now. My dog walked without a leash this time, because the town is like the damn apocalypse. Awesome. Yeah, I think this is becoming a thing.
I got some very important research done for QM tonight, so I’m feeling content. I’ve never been this excited about a story of mine, and knowing a lot of people seem equally pumped is the best feeling ever. Seriously, thank y’all for reading it even through it’s a WIP. I’m overwhelmed by all the love.
Ha, I get emotional around 6am. I should be off to bed in a bit.
Do you know how long QM is going to be? :) I'm one of those who can't start a fic unless it's finished, but I'm so excited to read it once it's done!! You're definitely one of my fave authors. Also, I can't get over how good Derek looks in that QM soundtrack picture, well done.
I’ve divided the story into 10 chapters, and I always thought each would be around 10k, which means the whole thing would be 100k, give or take a few.
However, the first two chapters have both been 12k. So I’m only 2/10 through the story but already got a quarter (ha!) of the estimated 100k. But, you know, what the hell. It’s gonna be long as fuck, I’ll leave it at that XD
And I totally understand if you wanna wait :) Glad you’re looking forward to it!

Friday night I posted the 2nd chapter of Quarter Mile, 1 year + 11 days later.
I just wanna say THANK YOU to everyone who’s reading and leaving me kudos and/or comments. I am absolutely blown away by all the amazing response. Honestly, I don’t have words to describe how happy it makes me. Saying the long wait was worth it, or how you wouldn’t mind waiting another year for the next update... Fuck, you’re the best. I don’t deserve you.
But you will not have to wait another year for chapter 3, I promise you XD
Me and some of my classmates from writing school actually created a cabin for Camp NaNoWriMo this July, and I joined with Quarter Mile as my project. I’ll still have August “off” to write, before I need to focus more on my original book in September, but now I feel really driven to write as much as possible just during July. We’ll see how it goes, but I’m confident!
Some of the biggest challenges while writing chapter 2 were:
wrapping up a chapter I started one fucking year ago
making sense of Race Wars
deciding if the ‘past child abuse’ tag was enough of a trigger warning
That being said, there are parts in this chapter I wish I’d done differently, and things that should’ve been in there but I forgot about. I’ll try not beating myself up about it though, and accept the fact that writing a >100k novel chapter by chapter is tough work, especially after a break like I had.
Anyways, moving on. I’m really looking forward to chapter 3! :D
Alright guys, shit is getting real.
This is the last update I’ll make before actually posting the chapter. All that’s left now is killing some darlings and filling in a few blanks. My beta should have time to go through it on Thursday, so I guess Friday will be the big day...

Whenever I think about what a big fucking mess of a project QM is I nearly stress and worry myself to death, so I try not to.
There are just so many parts to it apart from the writing -- manips, soundtrack, all the research, subplots -- that I wouldn’t exclude for the world, because they’re all what makes this story what it is. But... well, it’s a lot.
Also this kind of writing project is good practice for when I’m supposed to sit down and write my first actual book in September...
