“Coffee coffee coffee coffee...” I whispered, shuffling to the kitchen in my slippers. My mornings always begin before Eve’s.
Once the pot started to drip drip drip, I continued to the calendar where I circled today’s date, August 31st. In a soft cursive writing, the little box now surrounded by a black circle read, “Eve’s 26th Birthday”.
We’d had this weekend planned for months, but there was one thing I knew she wasn’t expecting. A few months before, I proposed to her but after just moving into a new apartment, I couldn’t exactly afford a ring. She accepted, and I promised that as soon as I could, she’d have a ring on that left hand.
Today was finally the day. I snagged the little blue box from my purse, poured two cups of coffee, and returned to the bedroom. I set the mugs down on the night stand and laid down next to her. She pulled me close. “Good morning,” I sang, “and a very happy birthday.”
Giggling, she rolled slightly to face me. Her eyes were red and puffy and when I started to prompt her about it she said, “I had that dream again.”
“Do you want to talk about it?”
She sat up, adjusting her pillow. I followed and handed her one of the mugs. “It’s just so incredible and...” she sipped, “I don’t know where my head came up with any of it.”
I laughed because I knew what she meant, “You have a beautiful mind.”
“And a scary one,” she sipped again, “this time was different.”
“This time, I was kidnapped.”
“Oh my god, are you okay?” I reached for her hand but she nodded.
“These people came for me and forced me to go there, to do what, I’m not really sure. We traveled across this island, but it had all different types of biomes, a desert, a forest, mountains, and not to mention the wildlife. It was magical, Thelma, but terrifying all at once. And I get the feeling that island is only the beginning of a much greater world.” She warmed her hands against her mug.
“Oh yeah? And what’s this world called?”
