Look After You - John Deacon x Reader
Summary : John’s okay with the paps looking at him, saying what they want about him, but when it comes to you, he’s not okay with them looking at you
The night air had calmed you after a stressful day in the sun. Finding your way to the balcony of the hotel, you leaned against the railing, pressing your head against it as you did so. You took a deep breath as the door behind you slid open.
The soft patter of shoes filled your ears before you felt a body press against yours. The body was warm and welcoming, the mouth finding its way to your neck before the arms wrapped around your middle, pulling you closer to them. You couldn’t fight the desire to lean back into the touch, couldn’t fight the smile that formed on your lips, it was truly welcoming as your blood pumped with new fervor.
A light laugh escaped you. “What are you doing, Mr. Deacon?”
A warm giggle danced its way into your ears, the arms tighter around you as you began to sway from side to side. “Maybe I wanted to hold you in my arms for a little while.” John placed the gentlest of kisses to your neck. “I missed you today, hardly saw you and when I did, you were gone as if you’d never been there.”
John shook his head. “No need to apologize, just doing your job. I understand.”
He sighed a little loud as he held you, so you turned in his arms and looked up at him. There was a look in his eyes that saddened you. You held his face in your hand. “What’s going on in your head, John. You’re always quiet, but this is a new kind of quiet, I’m not sure how I feel about it.”
John gently pushed your hand away, pressing you close to him as his chin rested upon your head. He didn’t speak, he couldn’t form the right words without upsetting himself even more. The stress of the day had gotten to him as well. You waited patiently for him to speak, there was no urgency for either of you to speak, you had all night, you were willing to wait all night.
About ten minutes had passed, the two of you swaying from side to side, when John had finally broken the piercing silence. “I don’t like the way they look at you.” He croaked, clearing his throat right after.
“What are you talking about?” you gently pushed away from him, keeping his arms around you as you looked up at him. “The boys love me; they don’t look at me terribly.”
He shook his head. “Not who I meant, love.”
“Then who?” you pressed. Your mind raced back through the day you had, trying to remember what could’ve made John think people were looking at you in a way he didn’t like. Nothing crossed your mind.
“The media, darling.” John didn’t like how far away from him you went and pressed you to him again. “When we’re out and about, I see them following us, see them looking at us, at you. They look at you like you’re something you’re not, something they can’t wait to write a horrendous story about. Easy money.”
“Whatever they try to write, John, it won’t bother me. I don’t read those kinds of things anyways. I learned that early on after Roger ripped a magazine from my hands just after I started with you guys.” The magazine had written that you were the traveling groupie, being tossed around between the four guys like you were a piece of meat. You had only read the first sentence before Roger came up behind you, grabbing the magazine out of your hands and throwing it out the window after having set it on fire with his lighter. ‘It’s best if you don’t read that’ was all he had said before walking away. You stayed away from them ever since.
“I remember that.” John chuckled softly. “I thanked him profusely for it, that’s when he told me to stop staring at you and finally ask you out on a proper date instead of staring like a creep.”
“You could never be a creep, Deacy, and I’m glad you look after me like you do. So, let the media look at me how ever they want, let them say whatever they want. We know it’s not true and that’s what matters.”
He nodded at your words, finally letting you step away from him, his hand still firmly holding yours, tugging you back inside the room. He laid on the bed, on top of the covers, opening his arms, beckoning for you to join him. You climbed into bed and held John like your life depended on it, your head resting on his chest, just above his beating heart, you put your cheek against it, grinning at the feel of it.
“Does it beat for me, Deacy?”
“It always has and always will, love.”
Sleep overtook the both of you a moment later, helping to further remove the stress of the day, preparing you for the next.
Walking with the boys to the bus the next morning, you walked arm in arm with Roger as Deacy walked behind with his bass in his arms. His eyes roamed around and narrowed when he noticed the paps waiting, their cameras at the ready. He even saw one of them widen their eyes at the sight of you arm in arm with Roger while Deacy was behind you. Oh they were going to have a field day with this one, he just knew it.
Climbing aboard the bus, Roger pushed you up ahead of him before turning to grab the bass from Deacy. The two of them shared a look. John wasn’t the only one who noticed the paps staring at you with a deep hunger in their eyes. “Gonna be everywhere by morning.”
John nodded in agreement. “Keep them from her as best we can.”
“Always do.” Roger huffed before climbing the rest of the way onto the bus.
He gave you a smile and patted your head as he walked past. You grinned after him as John climbed onto the bus as well, taking his place next to you. You leaned into his side and pressed a kiss to his cheek. “I heard you guys. I know it’ll be everywhere, but as I told you last night, I don’t pay them any mind. I know my reality, and that’s you. Thank you for looking after me though, I do appreciate it.”
“We’ll always look after you.”
You grinned, laying your head on his shoulder. “I know.”
