The Inquisition is different than other places. He is welcomed, for the most part. Not every conversation is a battlefield, nor every relationship a siege. It is different here, Kiernan knows it, and there's no sense in worrying that it will all go to shit at a moment's notice.

Unfortunately, he is not different. He has never been sensible, and sometimes one harsh word is all it takes to drag him back to that dreadful home in Kirkwall.

This was the first fic I'd posted in over 4 years, having orphaned or deleted all of my work from 2015-2017(?). Letting people read my writing again was terrifying but I got so much positive feedback (especially from @queerspacepunk) that it helped me get my confidence back as a writer. I had a great time working with Ty on it as well and I rlly do owe them my life for their help with the dialogue and their ability to give critical feedback in a way that wasn't discouraging.

Kiernan and Solas are so very dear to me and it was so exciting to have a completed fic with them that I could share with others. Some good old fashioned h/c and mutual pining as the set up for a fic that's mostly centered on how people talk about and cope with mental health and trauma in Thedas. with april an ocean away | M/M | G | 1,828 | Adaar/The Iron Bull (/Dorian Pavus)

Writing about Ehsaan's specific struggles with mental illness has been harder for me than writing about Kiernan's because they're much different than mine, but I try to do a lot of research and the assistance I've gotten from people with OCD has been absolutely invaluable.

I rlly love this fic. It's much lighter in tone than for one to handle but thematically... at least kind of similar? I love Ehsaan, I love writing his pov because he is just. so tender hearted. and I love that when I write things with him, I'm able to indulge in a lot of nostalgia for the place I grew up. also i am VERY TIRED so i apologies for the training of consciousness but to clarify -- been thinking (personally and professionally) a lot abt the term deadname and how it's v important for some people and also v uncomfy for others and what possible other options there are right? it would be nice to be able to focus on affirming a person's not deadname and kinda neutralising or ignoring the other, like i like to say "actual name" instead of chosen name or preferred name bc it IS yr actual name (or true name in my case bc haha get it) BUT bc cis ppl ruin everything people often think that that means i'm asking for their deadname?? so what do we call that ?? ex-name? anyway "not-name" popped into my head before and emmett who has had no more than 4.5 hours sleep per night for the last 4? 5? fucking days just committed to the bit and then they were also like, "wait, will they know what I'm talking about? will MARKERS (i tried to combine marcus and anders like three different ways and this is the best i got you are markers now)(that's a joke) ANYWAY will markers friedn get it? i dunno but they are getting this ask!!!

I personally don’t mind the term deadname, especially bc it makes cis people uncomfortable, but my default if I’m not saying that is “given name.” I totally see your reasoning behind it but I also don’t mind “chosen name” because like… yes! I chose this name for myself and that’s an important aspect of who I am! but plenty of people probably wouldn’t want that information broadcast to all and sundry

anyway. much to think about. also fun fact that i can’t remember if i ever told you but i almost named myself emmett 😂

important question!!!! what did rhian call kiernan when they were little? I can't remember the specifics of when kiernan figured out he was trans but i'm guessing his name at least didn't come till he was a bit older, but even before that i'm sure that his not-name wasn't comfortable (maybe especially bc it was tied to his mum (derogatory)) and rhian must have been able to sense that, right? so i can't imagine rhian using his not-name any more than absolutely necessary but also defs using some sort of name!! was it a variation of his not-name? was it a nickname? something else????

oh boy yknow I haven’t given a ton of thought to this! both rhian and kiernan have not-names but I have no idea what they are nor do I ever plan on coming up with ones (it’s not of my business lol). but like… they picked their actual names after joining the dalish, which leaves a pretty big chunk of time sort of unaccounted for bc they stayed in ostwick for 4 years before going to clan lavellan. like i’ve always imagined that rhian had something he called kiernan in private but not in front of their mother because they’d both get in trouble for it but there’d be no reason to keep it secret after leaving kirkwall.

when i wrote a little thing abt the two of them as children i had rhian call him kiernan even though it was Historical Revisionism gnsjdjdjdj

OH WAIT I BET IT WAS JUST “bugs”. which is an extremely easy nickname to get to and now i’m having a vision of varric trying that out for him and kiernan snapping because 1) he hasn’t been called that in years and 2) no one but rhian is allowed to call him that

i think this faded out when they got to ostwick and kiernan in particular was trying on a dozen names that never fit quite right.

as for Rhian, I think picking a new name had less to do with dysphoria and more to do with just leaving his old life behind as much as possible. i’m still not coming up with an old name for him but I don’t think he would’ve had an issue with kiernan calling him by that until it was changed

(side note: kiernan knew he was trans from a fairly young age—probably 8 or so? but he obviously wasn’t allowed to live As A Boy until they left kirkwall when he was 12)

very important question abt kiernan: do he and cole get along? are they complimentary or conflicting types of autistic/nd??? does kiernan explain to cole why stimming makes him feel better?? help him find stims? does cole always have spare stimmy things on hand??

i think they’re Mostly complimentary types of ND and that’s something that kiernan struggles with—feeling like he has to learn how to act like a person in the same way that cole does doesn’t feel Great. it frustrates him that he seems to struggle with it just as much as a spirit does. i think it would take him a while to accept that cole is someone he can find understanding and companionship with, as opposed to simply seeing cole as an uncomfortable reflection of himself.

cole having spare stimmy things on hand for kiernan is making me CRY i’m just thinking about cole noticing kiernan’s little fidget toy that blackwall made for him and then stealing random crap to leave in his quarters—sometimes things like children’s toys that make good clicky noises, sometimes worry stones or things with good textures..... kiernan accidentally leaving his fidget toy behind on a trip out of skyhold and struggling not to have a meltdown/panic when he realizes it’s not in his pack but cole has something else on hand for him...... 😭 this is such an excellent idea thank you so much

1 - Ed x Stede: a slow burn or an arson fire?

BOTH. IT'S BOTH and that's what makes it so good. both Ed & Stede are immediately ride-or-die and smitten w each other. Both have their own issues standing in the way so they can't really do anything about it until the very last moment. We have a rare case of a romance where we get love at first sight AND the slow, gradual falling in love. Because they're both idiots <3

8 - What moment emotionally fucked you up the most?

When Ed came to the pier and Stede wasn't there :( Just. The immediate resignation; "Yeah that tracks why did I even think he'd come". The way he paces a bit, then lies down, then finally rows away, all with the same void expression. That was visceral, I have seen it so many times and it still gets me :((
