I’m afraid I’m a bit uneducated on the subject myself, but I’ll try to answer as best I can.
Sigils are basically symbols that you create yourself in order to fulfill a purpose. The idea is that they are a super short spell that you can do without much materials– ideal if you’re low on supplies or whatnot.
There are many methods that you can use to make one. I personally write out all the letters in a statement for what I want the sigil to do (i.e. I WILL PASS THE TEST), then I get rid of all the matching letters (I WILL PASS THE TEST > W P A H) and break the letters into parts (W effectively becomes \ / \ /, H becomes | - |, and so forth, if that makes sense). Then I organize the parts into various shapes until one looks good. You’re free to find a way that works for you in terms of making a sigil. Heck, you don’t even have to use the Roman alphabet if you don’t want to! Your options are wide open in terms of creating them.
Some people (such as myself)like to charge their sigil before activating it, but not everyone does. This is to give the sigil the necessary power needed for it to fulfill its purpose. Charging takes the form of either focusing your attention on it, leaving it in the moon or sunlight, placing a crystal on it, or something else along those lines. I’ve also heard of placing the sigil on top of your charging phone to charge it. Once again, it’s all about your preferred method. If you want to throw pennies at it to charge it, that is your choice! Just make sure that you are focusing on what you want the sigil to do while you’re charging it, because magic without intent is just…throwing pennies at a strange symbol you drew.
Activating the sigil is the last step. There are two types of ways to activate: either keeping the sigil in tact, or by destroying it.
Leaving it intact usually means you want it to work for an extended period of time, such as a protection sigil, or a “this is my favorite shirt, please don’t get destroyed” sigil. You usually charge these when first putting it down. You can draw these on your skin (with a skin-safe method! Don’t give yourself blood poisoning, please!), stitch them into clothes, paint them onto walls or furniture, etc. After charging them, you can usually leave them be until they naturally wear off, or revitalize them from time to time. But if you still feel that you need to activate them, yelling at them or perhaps snapping your fingers should do it. If you feel you don’t need to activate them, great!
Destroying them is the most common method I’ve seen for activating. You don’t necessarily need to charge these before hand, but I personally do. The most popular method being burning the paper or leaf the sigil has been drawn on. However, not everyone is able to burn things so freely, so there are more methods you can use. Depending on where you first drew the sigil, you can rip up the leaf or paper, erase it, dissolve it into water, draw it into a bar of soap before using it, drawing it with flour on a cake mix before stirring, etc.
