Questyle Audio 600i: The Greatest Component I Never Reviewed!
(and, its' CMA600i)
Breaching a level of honesty that's bordering on stupidity: I'm not sure what happened when it came down to writing the damn review/column/WTF I didn't do it yet, so who cares about that shit anyway!?
I loved the damn thing so much all I wanted to do was listen. I know I know - you've heard that before. This time it's true, on my grandfathers good name, and Arifs, Hps, my Giants. So, believe me, witnessing, and of course participating, in certain stranger-than-fiction events that transpired over these last 18 months I do NOT want to F__ with Karma, Jesus, Hashem, Buddha, or any other way to say: I ain't F'in around! I would own one right now if I could. It drove the hell outta everything ,from my most-cherished Audeze LCD-2Fs to Sennheiser HD800s, and was superb with my Audio-Technica 900Xs. Even with ENIGMAcoustics Dharma D1000 or Audeze on-ear SINE, the 600i does such a spectacular job of capturing the essence of fine recordings. It's the kind of contemporary amp/DAC that sounds like an old school high-end integrated amplifier - just when they were getting good!
I got tons of notes on my listening sessions, and I loved every damn minute of music through this thing. With Questyle's own patented Current Mode solid-state amplification technology, the 600i, like all QA components kicks some serious ass; and it's not merely about slam and dynamic gestalt (though it's got both of those, make no mistake). There's a level of musical precision, that magical resolving capability that draws you in. I usually hear this kinda' quality reserved only for a lines statement products. But, at $1,299 bucks - the 600i is a tight, slickly modern masterpiece!!!! Most highly recommended.

Many of us music addicts and audio geeks got into this thing because access to the music was like a drug. The sounds change our mood, our outlooks on our futures , at certain times in my life, music could either sink me into the deepest depression, or have me lookin' high as hell on ecstacy in my friends backyard; just sittin' around a boombox shootin' the shit. Truth is: That's hasn't changed. But the amount of people I'm interfacing with everyday that are engaged, in one way or another, in listening to music, and therefore willing to discuss its endless possibilities (I mean, seriously - is there a better topic for discussion if you meet somebody with similar tastes- it's buttta); that number is far greater than it was when I moved to out to Northern California in 2005! Napster, iTunes, the iPod, and the proliferation of better quality and cheaper memory, and even better performance-based DAP (digital audio players, or, also known as portable audio players) has brought the music outside with us again and all around. This ain't a walkman-type revolution though. Even then the music in our Discman's were also an adjunct to something else. Now, now we're talking about a far deeper connection to our phones and tablets than ever before. The walkman? It was merely a music player. It had but one purpose. Play the tunes while we did something else. The portable devices we use today are actually digital hubs to our collective worlds. We get our news through em, schedule (then cancel) meetings, make dinner plans, and play our favorite record of the week through em whenever we can! If it seems like I'm speaking Swahili, go read some back issues of WIRED, VICE, Rolling Stone, maybe some Malcolm Gladwell or Seth Godin. Shit, even a few of the Hi-fi rags, though most were pretty damn late to the whole personal audio phenomena. I will admit a bit of selfish pride in not havin' to be the crazy kid who "abandoned high end audio." Gimme a fuckin' break. I needed to eat bitches. And someone's gotta teach these youngsters what quality really means! Many of them can can now afford something that offers a level of sonic integrity strictly reserved for the privilged only a few years ago. It's a great time to be a headphone enthusiast!
We're searching for those fleeting moments of true connection that are only born through a shared love of the music. Sure, it sounds like the same ol' dirty hippy bullshit. But it ain't. During the erection of the interconnected economy it's kind of ironic that, when it comes to music consumption, we've actually digressed while pushing things forward technologically! Audiophile-dom was based on experiencing music on its own, as its own activity, not merely an adjunct to somethin' else! Now we're 24-7 multi-taskers. We walk while staring and touching our cell phone screens, barely lookin' up to see what's right in front of our faces. God forbid we spot a second and take a breath, maybe smell the damn roses once in a while ya know? DAMN. We're driving and talking out-loud to ourselves all-the-time. Before this constant stream of telecommunication dominated our daily lives, we exercised more personal choices, I believe. When we weren't at school or at work, it seemed like we valued our own time more. I'm not sure how to explain it exactly. But it felt like we had better control over our time than we do today. Everything is coming a us all the damn time. You gotta choose your break-time from the interwebs wisely, and un-plug ever couple a' days. I can certainly say it easy enough - I just can't seem to actually do it! Unless I have a good reason to step away from that internet portal, as that's where all my earnings come from. Many of you are in the same position today. What's one of my all-time favorite reasons to take a break from the Twitterverse? Listening to my fuckin' music. Or, jammin' out to something new. It reinvigorates me, stimulates my senses, and reminds me of the world outside my Retina screen!
