Sora pressed his lips together, trying to refrain yourself from asking the question. He tried! He really did. But he had met few sorcerers in his life — there was Merlin, but the man was kinda eccentric and was usually busy; and Yen Sid, but he was too scary; and Donald, but he was just Donald —, and he was horribly curious.

“Can you do, like, fancy magic?” And, most importantly, could he teach him?

"You're far from alright," Ignis scolded him as he speeded up his pace, getting to his side just in time to wrap his arm around the prince's back, allowing him to rest his weigh on him.

A gloved hand was lifted to his face, pressing the naked skin of his wrist instead to check his temperature. "Astrals, Noct, you're burning," his tone was now as worried as it was irritated by Noctis’ idea of continuing even though he was in such bad shape. Instinctively, he took his own jacket off and put it over the other’s shoulders.

"We’re going back to the motel, and we’ll stay there for today.”

“I guess that makes sense,” he agreed, not wanting to push him further for a more exact answer. It’s not like he needed names, anyway. That was more than enough for him to understand the situation.

In a way, he was content with just having his question answered. Maybe it was just his heart talking — out of sympathy and genuine good will, instead of trivial curiosity —, but it certainly had sounded way bolder than he had intended. For some time now, he had been trying to get into the good habit of letting out whatever thoughts might cloud his heart, and often forgot to assume that not everyone was so ready to do the same.

“I think so. But you’re right. When it comes to these things, you aren’t aware you’ve ever learned them until you find yourself having to relearn them,” and here he was talking from experience. “But it’s never too late to do so,” a small, reassuring smile tugged at his lips — an offering, a promise. While none of them would forcefully push his boundaries, they all were willing to help.

“I know, I know I did… I just— I might have got the date wrong,” Lea lied. He had promised to get rid of that dirty habit of his as well, so that was two broken promises on a row.

He had hoped Roxas would just forget that they supposed to go to the beach that day — how naive of him, Roxas would never forget such a thing —, or at least that he wouldn’t bump into him on his way out.

“We can go any other day, really. I won’t forget. But today I need to—” he let out a deep sigh. “Isa hasn’t been feeling well lately. I told him that I would spend the day with him… you know I can’t postpone that.”

Mazelinka’s house was always a safe haven for him. It had been since before he became a fugitive, and now that he was regularly running from the palace’s guards, barely making it there in time not to be arrested and executed.

He did, in fact, felt guilty for dragging the woman around with him — there was no telling what her fate would be if she was to be caught with him —, but having a lingering sense of guilt eating his mind away was pretty much the usual.

Still, he found himself longingly staring through the window after the guards were gone. He was innocent, after all — at least, of the one crime they intended to condemn him for.

“Do you think it might come someday, Nadir…? The day when I get to walk around Vesuvia as a free man?”

As a renewed strategist, Ignis had a remarkable sense of direction. The hours he spent reading maps and the hours they had spent in the past coming and going around the place gave him a solid grasp on the terrain. His phone’s geolocation — which had became an essential tool for him during the past years — and a reliable chocobo did the rest.

He dismounted once he was close enough and did the rest of the walk on foot, a hand on the chocobo’s feathers to guide himself. The ground was rough enough for him not to want to be careless.

“You shouldn’t die alone out here, either,” despite the bitterness of his words, there still was a certain fondness to his voice. He felt relived by the fact that he was conscious and the lack of a stink of blood. He knelt next to him and felt about until he found where exactly Prompto was laying. “I brought supplies. Where are you hurt?”

He wouldn’t dare to look at the girl in the eye. He had already struggled to gather the necessary courage to face her, and now he found himself at a loss for words. But it was too late to back off, he reminded himself, and it was the least he could do for her.

“I don’t expect you to forgive me for what I did, but I — I never had anything against you personally. All I wanted was to bring Sora back. And there was no other way. If there had been one, I would have chosen it instead of hurting you.”

His feet were already starting to lead him in the opposite direction, moved by the instinctive need to flee — rather than staying to possibly hear his apology being rejected.

“I’m sorry,” he mumbled.
