Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has agreed in principle to a plan to develop an urban area with a focus on scientific and educational advancement in the south-central province of Binh Dinh.
The urban area will be the first of its kind in the country as the government takes a “brave and pioneering step” to attract scientists from around the world to work in Vietnam, Phuc told scientists as he visited a local scientific center on Sunday.
The International Centre for Interdisciplinary Science and Education (ICISE), based in Binh Dinh’s capital city of Qui Nhon, was founded in 2013 by two esteemed Vietnamese academics, Prof. Jean Tran Thanh Van and his wife Prof. Le Kim Ngoc.
Since its establishment, ICISE has hosted 40 international symposiums with the participation of more than 3,500 global scientists, including 12 Nobel Prize winners in different fields.
The future urban area will be built with ICISE as its core, PM Phuc said, as the center will play a crucial role in advancing science and technology, including fundamental and applied sciences, in the new hub.

The government leader spoke highly of ICISE’s achievements thus far and expected the center to foster the country’s scientific researches and prepare Vietnam’s human resources for Industry 4.0, or the fourth industrial revolution which will see jobs going to skilled workers in technological areas.
The upcoming urban area in Qui Nhon will serve as a welcoming destination for scientists worldwide and a platform to connect such scientists with local universities and research centers, Phuc stressed.
The Ministry of Science and Technology and the Vienam Academy of Sciences have been tasked with creating favorable conditions to bring into full play the intellectual capability of ICISE scientists.
