While recipes for Iced Tea go back as far as the 1870’s, it wasn’t until 1904 that it exploded in popularity. This was due in no small part to the World’s Fair and the heat of the summer that was baking it. Iced Tea was being served, and the fair goers were drinking it en masse, and in almost no time at all, it was being served in tall glasses so well known for this purpose that they were called iced-tea glasses. You know a drink has truly come into its own when special utensils are made for its preparation, and it wasn’t just the glasses, iced-tea spoons and lemon forks were developed to make its consumption both easier and more satisfying. Iced Tea is typically made from the tea plant, but just like with hot teas, it can be made with just about anything, and herbal teas are often a popular choice for the cool drink. Imagine the parade of flavors available to you, a cool mint tea stirred with a bit of lime, or if you’re in India you may as well do as the locals do and enjoy your tea with a bit of ginger. They were the hallmark of movie watching in our youth, carrying films home from our local Blockbuster for a night of family fun and entertainment. Together we’d gather around the huge cathode ray tube TV’s in our living room, not even thinking to complain about the static lines that occasionally would run across the screen from a movie that had been worn with love from rewatching. National VCR Day comes each year to remind us to take some time to appreciate the nostalgia of the tech of yesteryear. Yo-Yo Day is celebrated annually on the 6th June. It is no coincidence that this corresponds with the birthday of famous entrepreneur Donald Duncan Sr, who in the 1930s, got into the yo-yo business. Yo-yos have been around 2,000 years and were known under different names such as quizzes or bandalores. Nevertheless, the origin of the yo-yo appears to stem from the Philippines and the earliest entry of the word appears in a Filipino dictionary in the early 1860s. In the 1920s, Pedro Flores (a man with Filipino roots) began constructing yo-yos in America. He was stunned with how American youngsters and adolescents took to the toy and started mass producing the product. Yo-yos are firmly embedded into toy culture across the globe. Therefore, celebrating this event may involve you throwing a Yo-Yo based party, whereby all those attending must bring a completely unique yo-yo. Tailors Day is a day where people are encouraged to dress their best and to reach out and thank the person that helps them achieve their high level of sartorial elegance. While off-the-peg clothes may have become commonplace, even among some of the best dressed, the tailor still plays an integral part in ensuring some people look their best, and Tailors Day is the day to thank them. There is no doubting the skill of a good tailor. They can create the perfect outfit, for any event, and can make even the most casual dresser appear elegant and attractive. It stands to reason, therefore, that they should be properly celebrated. Arguably the best way to celebrate the day, and to show thanks, is to wear a suit or outfit that was professionally tailored to fit. However, some people that are especially grateful choose to buy cards and even gift baskets for their tailors. No-one is sure quite how this festival of going back for more started but popular activities include starting off with a viewing of “Groundhog Day”, having the same favourite meal for both lunch and dinner and revisiting important places from your past, such as the spot where you got engaged, graduated or celebrated a personal triumph. Some take things further by repeating everything they say everything they say until others join in with the fun or ask what they are doing. Then the day can be rounded the day off by settling down again to watch Bill Murray win the heart of Andie Macdowell in Groundhog Day.
