The book was heavy in his hands, and he held it as if afraid it would catch fire. It had never intimidated Radais like that. She wondered what he knew that she didn’t. Especially after he shot her a glare and placed it reverently on the dresser.

“To be treated with such disdain,” he said, taking a seat on the bed, “It must have done something terrible to you.”

“Don’t worry about it.”

“I heard what happened, did you sense anything?”

“My mind wasn’t exactly focused on sensing old energy,” she grumbled, rubbing her face in the pillow, “I was more focused on my mother.”

“It was always risky.” Of course he had to remind her. She didn’t want to dignify him with the truth, so instead, she changed the subject.

“Abe says you’re an ass.”

“Perhaps he’s right?”

“I never considered that,” she said laughing, turning over in bed to look up at him. He was staring at the door, as if considering leaving, but then he seemed to settle and returned his gaze to her.

“It’s easier if they discount me,” he replied, “Makes me seem like I’m not a threat.”

“Are you?”

“Not to you. And not to these people. But to the Court? Very much so.”

Kitchen God

In spite of himself, Abe liked to watch her in the mornings. He sat back in the chair, cup of coffee growing cold in his hand, his gentle brown eyes never wavering from her. There was a tranquility to her that had him entranced.

Her movements were fluid and sweeping. All the fire-and-brimstone, the pulse of physic energy, the spark of anger - they were gone, as if the tide had gone out while she slept. She spooned grounds into the coffee maker, then fished a mug from the drying rack. When she turned to open the fridge door, she did so like a dancer, letting her toes spread and slide on the tile. And she pointedly avoided his gaze, though the twitch of a smile let him know that she felt it.

As the coffee maker sputtered and hissed, Radais arched her back, taking a deep breath. Something in the way she stood - one hip leaned against the counter, brown hair tangled in a loose bun - seemed docile and domestic. He’d almost forgot her true nature, except for the way her yellow eyes flashed in the light.

Carefully, she poured her coffee, stirring cream and nutmug into it with reverence, as if it were a great offering. He’d thought he’d seen her lips moving - a whispered prayer. Watching her like this set his soul on fire, an uneasy burning that he could feel deep in the pit of his stomach.

She left the gentleness behind when she left the kitchen. When she sat down opposite Abe, the angry, icy glare was back in her features, darkening her eyes. It seemed as though the coffee she sipped at was the only thing keeping her from tearing his throat out. The air hummed with electricity. But he didn’t move. He deserved her contempt and accepted the punishment. Besides, even set alight with rage, she was beautiful.
