So, this is a couple days late, but I’m gonna go off about this anyway.
I was listening to a radio series on NPR that presents publiic debates. They’re two teams of two pundits with a moderator going on about a specific subject. No matter what the subject, I’ve usually found nuggets I agree with on both sides each week.
The subject itself isn’t really the discussion worth having. It was what one of the “experts” said that really set me off. He’s apparently a prolific writer (though I hadn’t heard of him) whom has drawn a lot of heat over his views. When asked by the moderator about why he’s drawn the ire of so many people, he quipped, “because I speak the truth.”
And I wanted to punch my radio.
Look, I’ll be the first to admit I’m an arrogant cuss. I have steamrolled people in debates to “prove” my point. I legitimately have apologized to a lot of people for that abhorrent behaviour. It took me a while to learn that gaining an audience and being right aren’t the same thing.
The good thing that came from it though was now I take very specific care to express that I don’t have all the answers. I can only speak to my point of view and experience. I can quote the views of others with the caveat that those too are only opinions or at least the result of study.
Anyone claiming they speak the absolute truth, should be questioned HARSHLY.
No one has the absolute truth, and anyone arrogant enough to think their own personal truth is more valid than all others is an authority on nothing. That level of arrogance ignores all outside perspective. When you come into a debate unwilling to acknowledge you may be wrong, you’re the one to ignore in the debate because your opinion doesn’t matter.
Now, don’t mistake this for me denying anyone can know the truth. What I’m saying is that ignoring all possibility of being wrong is the first sign of the unenlightened. To say the rest of the world is caught in the cave staring at the shadows and ONLY one person sees the true shapes of the world is paramount to being the prophet coming down the mountain.
I listened to the whole debate and that was literally his stance. He spent every moment of his allotted time claiming only his view could be correct and the rest of the world was ignorant. Only his truth was valid and all other views were dismissed and derided without examination.
Th only satisfaction was that he didn’t win.
