30 years ago on June 12th, over a million people gathered in Central Park to
protest nuclear energy and weaponry. To commemorate the beautiful memories
and break through the anti-nuclear movement, NYC's anti-nuclear groups will
take to the street again.
It has been nine months after the earthquake and tsunami that triggered the
Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan. While the crippled reactors still
continue to spew radioactive materials, Japanese government is eager to
restart two nuclear reactors since the nation went nuclear-free on May 6th,
2012. The intention of the Japanese government goes against the majority of
people living in Japan, as well as those of us in NYC, who together
celebrate Japan's zero-nuclear state.
In the United States, the catastrophe in Japan triggered many to raise
voices against the nuclear industry. However, the industry and federal
agency are hand in hand to further prioritize profit over public safety even
after the Fukushima nightmare. The anti-nuclear movement is sharing the
crucial moment in history with the people throughout the world who are
standing sgainst the 1%, of which the aging nuclear energy industry remain
active to maintain the wealth of the capital, as well as to keep nuclear
technology in military use.
On June 12th, the people of NYC will take to the street to call for the
shutting down of Indian Point, a catastrophe waiting to happen on Hudson, as
well as in solidarity with those who continue to suffer the evil of
radiation. The march will be accompanied by a live n.o.n.u.k.e.s. DJs via a
radio program, while each marcher will carry their own portable radios to
play the program as they walk. Speakers include Alice Slater, Chris Williams
and Minori Nakamura, and the program is hosted by Ken Gale, of Eco-Logic on
WBAI NY. Those who are not present at the march can join the protest by
tuning to 99.5FM or listening live on WBAI.org.
