Carlos had had a hard life. When he was young, he was a very bright boy who loved to go to school and learn everything he possibly could. He entered science fairs and watched documentaries and borrowed plenty of books from the school's library. He always did so well! But it all started to go downhill the night that his father abandoned his family. His mama was left alone with three children to care for, Carlos and his younger brother and sister. She struggled to support them all and keep food in their tummies. When Carlos was in middle school, he found out that his mama had turned to prostitution in her desperation. Obviously, Carlos was devastated. Ever since his father left, he'd stepped up to help with the little ones, helping them with homework, giving them baths, putting them to bed when mama was working late, and various helpful things like that. And when he learned exactly where his mama was making her money, he decided that he needed to get a job to help with the bills. Since he was still so young, he could only get paid under the table, working for family friends and such. So he got a job cleaning up at a little restaurant that one of his neighbors owned. It wasn't much money, but it did help. He'd do anything to help his family.
All of the stress from his family's situation really got to Carlos over the years. By the time he was in high school, his grades had dropped quite a bit. He no longer had time for school. Not when he had a job and his mama and siblings to worry about. So much for going to college. Oh well. As long as he could help his loved ones, he was happy. So when high school was out, Carlos stayed at home to continue helping out. His younger brother and sister were still in school. If only there were some way that he could make enough money so that his family would never have to worry about it again. So that they could live comfortably. So that mama would never have to let another disgusting man touch her again. If only.
A few years passed, Carlos now a young adult, before an opportunity presented itself. Some men came to Carlos, telling him they knew about his family's financial troubles and how he would do anything to take care of them. They made him an offer, steal something for them, and they'd pay him a hefty price. Enough to care for his family for quite a while. Stealing was wrong. Very wrong. But...Carlos /would/ do anything. He would just tell his family that he'd won the money in a lottery or something. "What do I have to steal?" He asked.
Apparently there was a science lab in the city in which scientists had begun developing a medicine that had the potential to cure the common cold. Colds were a pain in the ass, so a cure (not just something that covered up the symptoms) would be neat. If the company the scientists were working for sold the medicine, they would make a fortune. The men that had come to see him worked for that company's /rival/ company. Carlos was meant to steal the medicine and bring it to them, so that their company could produce it themselves and make the fortune. It was all about money. Carlos probably wouldn't risk screwing up a new medicine if it was made to cure something like cancer. But colds, well, he could take the risk.
Carlos agreed to do it, understanding that if he was caught, he would likely go to prison and the company who was hiring him would deny ever being involved with him. But he would take the chance to help his family. All he had to do was pose as a scientist (funny, since that's what he had wanted to be when he was a child), sneak into the lab, and take the medicine. That's all. Easy. Right? They gave him a gun, just in case things got rough in there. He really hoped that he wouldn't have to use it.
The man said goodbye to his mama, brother, and sister that morning. Maybe he'd even make enough from this theft to send his siblings to college, or at least help with tuition a little. He wanted them to have a proper education. The type of education that he might have gotten himself if things hadn't gone the way that they did. It was thoughts like that that helped him remain calm as he showed up at the lab, dressed in a lab coat and actually looking like he fit in. The men who hired him had given him a fake identification badge that claimed he was a new employee, recently hired. The ID helped him get past security and into the lab. On the way, he passed by a man interviewing an important looking scientist. He heard the scientist saying something about the new medicine, so he assumed the interview was about the same medicine that he was there to steal. And god, if he had the time, he would have stayed a while to watch the interviewer. He was /beautiful/. Carlos was very attracted to men, but hadn't ever really pursued a relationship with anyone because he didn't think he could handle a relationship on top of his very stressful life. Maybe one day, though.
The medicine was heavily guarded. Of course it was. It was going to make them a fortune, why wouldn't they guard it? Carlos tried to remain calm, but there were camera and locks and people watching him and it was too much. There was no way he was getting that stuff without getting caught red handed. There was only one thing that he could think to do now, and that was result to his last option. He wouldn't be able to see his family again, he'd have to be on the run. But at least he could still send them money and provide for them from afar. With a sigh and a moment of hesitation, Carlos pulled out his gun and grabbed the attractive interviewer he'd seen earlier. An innocent bystander. Surely they wouldn't want him to get hurt, right? They'd have to give him the medicine so that he'd let the man go free, unharmed.
Carlos had grabbed the man from behind, arm around his neck and gun to his head. He whispered, "I'm so sorry about this" to him before yelling at everyone in the room. "Get me the medicine and no one gets hurt!"
