Prompt #4: Self-editing

Another shower of sparks flew off the bench as Marlowe continued to work tirelessly to supply the Alliance with all that they continued to demand of her. Soldiers were a dime a dozen, but good tradespeople were hard to find out on the Front. The Empire had already taken most of Ala Mhigo’s most skilled workers away years ago, and many of Eorzea’s craftsmen had chosen to stay home.

That left her with her workload, and an increasingly bad temper.

It was no secret that Marlowe had always been an angry person--at least for as long as her memory could clearly serve her.

Perhaps that was why the forge had come to suit her so well. It had turned out to be quite the satisfying outlet, hammering away at what felt like an unending stream of steel for hours on end. It was almost relaxing, as long as she was not disturbed.

Many an unfortunate Alliance soldier had learned that lesson the hard way.

The name “Ragehammer” ended up being thrown around Castrum Oriens in no time, having followed her all the way here from Limsa Lominsa with the Maelstrom. It bothered her little. If anything it was a boon for scaring even a few more folks away from asking favors.

This was her place, this was her part in all of this, and she wanted to be left to it. One piece at a time she would help bring the Alliance closer to taking back her home.

Then perhaps once this was over she could finally relax. If things were right again in Ala Mhigo, maybe the rest would fall into place. Maybe she wouldn’t have to be so unspeakably angry anymore.

For now she simply told herself that every blow she struck was one closer to fixing all of this, and those parts of herself that she couldn’t wait to be without. The repetitive clang of hammer on steel became a soothing sound shortly after she adopted that mantra.

As little as she actually enjoyed being angry, she knew that for now it was an indispensable resource. It came as a seemingly endless well for her to draw on when she needed to push herself harder. 

Only when all of this was over would she think to start working on herself in that way. Until that day came, at least she could say that she had motivation on her side if nothing else.
