Chisenhale Gallery and Afterall’s Black Atlantic Museum host a discussion with cultural theorist Dr. Ramon Amaro, artist, writer and Afterall Editor Adjoa Armah and Rindon Johnson reflecting on Johnson’s new commission at Chisenhale Gallery as it relates to thinking on technology, archiving, and black ontologies.
Rindon Johnson lives and works in Berlin, Germany. Selected exhibitions include; Law of Large Numbers: Our Bodies, SculptureCenter, New York (2021); Away with You, Smithsonian Museum of American Art, Washington DC; This End The Sun, New Museum, New York (both 2020); Circumscribe, Julia Stoschek Collection, Düsseldorf (All 2019); New Black Portraitures, Rhizome, Online; and NGV Triennial, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (both 2017).
Dr Ramon Amaro, Ph.D. is Lecturer in Art and Visual Cultures of the Global South at UCL (University College London) Department of History of Art. Dr. Amaro’s writing, artistic practice, and research investigate the role of race and racism in computer vision and machine perception. His forthcoming book, The Black Technical Object: On Machine Learning and the Aspiration of Black Being (Sternberg / MIT, 2022) is a contemplation on the abstruse nature of machine learning, mathematics, and the deep incursion of racial hierarchy.
Adjoa Armah is editor and research fellow at Afterall, where she is responsible for the Paul Mellon Centre-funded digital research project 'Black Atlantic Museum' and the 'Afterall Art School', platform. She has an independent practice as an artist and is also founder of Saman Archive (2015 - ongoing), a gathering of photographic negatives encountered across Ghana, through which she explores new models of institution building grounded in Akan temporalities and West African technologies of social and historical mediation.
