Jane Austen subverting the tropes of the future, the opposite of the Important Plot Fever Reveal:
when Marianne, suddenly awakened by some accidental noise in the house, started hastily up, and, with feverish wildness, cried out,— “Is mama coming?” “Not yet,” cried the other, concealing her terror, and assisting Marianne to lie down again, “but she will be here, I hope, before it is long. It is a great way, you know, from hence to Barton.” “But she must not go round by London,” cried Marianne, in the same hurried manner. “I shall never see her, if she goes by London.” - Sense & Sensibility, Ch 43
Marianne is feverish and saying words, if this happens in a TV show today I just KNOW that they will say something extremely important to the plot, like reveal who they love, confess to a crime, give away the secret formula. But no, Marianne just says that her mom shouldn't go by London, which is nonsensical because they are currently closer to Barton than London.
Jane Austen for the win!
