starting a BG3 run as none other than Rapheus bc i have (no pun intended) major brain worms about him. he's inspired by a marine iguana and a lava lizard

Rapheus info dump that no one asked for because I'm having brainworms about him constantly and you all need to understand why.

Volgas Oleke Rapheus, for those of you that don't know, is the Mirage's Lizardfolk cartographer. He, like other pirates, is referred to primarily by his surname, but in his case, no one actually knows his real name with the exception of Wilkes. This is due to him being a hermited personality by nature but also because he doesn't want to bring dishonor to his immediate family back home for taking to a life of piracy.

Clan Rapheus is a minor clan which comes from the House of Law, and whose lineage rests in passing down printmaking techniques etc, so when Rapheus got pulled into the fighting, he kind of didn't know which was up until Wilkes showed him the ropes, unable to stand by and see this man lead to the slaughter. They became fast friends because of that and one day when they were ambushed in their camp, Rapheus took a spear in the leg in place of Wilkes after shoving him away at the last minute. His reasoning for it after was that "the war can't be won without you but they don't need the likes of me." The impact shattered his shin in many places and tore the ligaments attaching it to the muscles.

Their camp was decimated after that and their medical supplies destroyed so Wilkes took it upon himself to set Rapheus' leg and try to heal it. This is a really difficult thing to do because Lizardfolk legs are a little like horse legs, in that when something happens to them its best to amputate or kill the ailing lizard, due to how delicately they're constructed. Wilkes knew if he amputated, he would likely be sentencing Rapheus to death because of everything that was going on and having no medical supplies, so as much as Rapheus asked him to (so Wilkes wouldn't have to carry on worrying about him) he didn't, and eventually the leg healed, but it was never right after that.

He now uses a cane to get around and while his fighting days were brief, they were enough for him and he was just glad to make it out of the war alive. Wilkes however, felt horribly guilty about everything and vowed to help him find a situation after the war. Rapheus declined, not wanting to be a burden on the newly made war hero, and returned home, much to Wilkes disappointment.

Eventually, Rapheus leaves home after discovering a love of botany, and wants to study plant-life across Oepus. He ends up traveling around a great deal before settling down in a small village called Obereyes in the March of Mern. The March of Mern is a location that is routinely attacked by pirates and one day, during a raid conducted by the Mirage, Rapheus meets Wilkes again, this time as Fay's Quartermaster. They obviously don't take his stuff and while Wilkes offers him a place on board the Mirage, Rapheus doesn't take it.

They meet several more times there and one day, Wilkes introduces him to Fay, and she ends up taking quite an interest in him. He shares with her his background as a printmaker and amateur botanist, but she is particularly interested in how well made his maps are. So interested in fact, that she kills her existing cartographer and hires Rapheus to replace him. Since then, he sails with them, not fighting but studying his plants and making his maps. He never says it, but part of the reason why he didn't deny Fay when she offered him the job (despite knowing his fate might be the same one day if she ever found a better mapmaker than him) is because he wanted to absolve Wilkes of his guilt from what happened all those years ago.

Later on, he becomes more or less and adoptive father to Jace, a little blind Lizardfolk boy infected with sockeye, Fay takes pity on when buying more crew from the tower prison, Kinsler's Nest. The boy becomes his apprentice in time, making maps using a special technique Rapheus developed for him using forks to judge distances and special ridged paper so Jace can tell where and what shape he's drawing. Jace in turn helps Rapheus get around, especially because his pain flares up badly from time to time and can leave him bedridden on his worst days.

Axtapor. And only because he thinks its alcohol but doesn't realize it isn't until he's had the whole thing lol.

Fay at the urging of Wilkes who really just wants to use it as an excuse publicly cuddle his wife. Little does he realize that her long wavy hair is very efficient at collecting hay 😅

Gets lost in the maze and has to be rescued?

Mariel LOL. She has a very bad sense of direction and at some point would probably give up and cry until she was found. Axtapor is the one that goes to get her and probably wrecks the maze in the process while also yelling at the poor dude running the attraction.

Shows up in a Halloween costume?

Probably Axtapor and only because Mariel said to dress seasonally and nothing else. He's technically not wrong but also not right haha.

Makes a beeline for the pumpkins and spends the entire time choosing the perfect one to carve?

Rapheus. He has a very intense interest in botany and would totally obsess over finding the perfect pumpkin!

Finds somewhere to wait and jumpscare the others?

Lexlar. He's dumber than a bag of rocks but he loves jumpscaring people and pulling pranks so yeah. Has to be him lol.

Do your characters or world have them?

Oh gosh, yes. There are secrets EVERYWHERE in AASOAF. Even the people who seem like they wouldn't have any have at least one. As readers, we are privy to what those are as the story unfolds, though there are some that we'll never learn!

Are they considered a good thing or bad?

It depends on who you ask. Characters like Mariel and Lady Fisla will tell you they are bad to keep, but others like Fay and Wilkes will tell you they are necessary to survive. Some like Rapheus and Kirik will tell you that secrets are neither of those things and solely that person's business.

Who in your cast is most likely to spill one?

Anise lol. This girl is the world's biggest gossip and she LOVES making other people's business her business. She'd absolutely spill a secret once she had it.

If I walked into a McDonald's at 3 am on a Tuesday, which oc am I most likely to see behind the counter? Who is taking 10 minutes deciding what to order? Who is enjoying their happy meal? Who is the one feeding the dumpster cats outside?

If I walked into a McDonald's at 3 am on a Tuesday, which oc am I most likely to see behind the counter?

AXTAPOR. I have this modern day AU that I've mentioned before where he is a mechanic but also ends up cycling through a bunch of other jobs because he is incapable of following the rules and gets himself fired constantly. McDonald's is absolutely a job he'd have. "Oi, the BigMac been comin' as a meal. Ye want it Medium or Large?" *Puts it into the register wrong and then you get an order that "Been how ye asked it for!" 20mins later LOL*

Who is taking 10 minutes deciding what to order?

Jace for sure. He's blind so he'd have Rapheus dictate him the menu and then ho-hum about what he wants FOREVER making him repeat the menu items over and over again. But that's not why he takes so long. He won't admit it but he's a really picky eater but also has a huge appetite so deciding what to eat is always struggle.

Who is enjoying their happy meal?

Wilkes. He loves to collect things and would HAVE to have all of the different toys that come with the Happy Meal so he'd order them for "his son" but you'd definitely catch him eating the fries and being like wow it's not so bad... until a few hours later. He's old but also Lizardfolk can't be eating too many carbs or they get upset tummies so he'd have a bad time later LOL.

Who is the one feeding the dumpster cats outside?

Mariel 🥹 she loves little critters and would definitely have a surplus of free food that Axtapor gave her with her order (can you see why he gets fired?). "They look so hungry and I won't finish it all. 🥺"

He been a boy.” Rapheus chided. I frowned. “Aye then. Milord it be…” The boy relaxed, and a smile crossed his features as he uttered a word of thanks to Rapheus in Tlaxlian. Despite disliking Jace’s address, it was the correct one. Sign enough that he was well aware of his own position in the social hierarchy even if we weren’t presently in the Empire...
