With Deltarune coming sooner than I'm emotionally ready for (2018 to 2021 to 2025, holy shit I'm gonna be a different person every time this game releases a new chapter) I've been cycling through different topics to think about, mostly around just what the fuck's up with Ralsei and one thing I'm starting to wonder is...

Why DOES his first design look like that? From an in-universe perspective, okay, he's probably disguising himself because he doesn't know what having friends is like and he's sticking to the "friendly, vaguely railroady tutorial companion" bit, but from the bits of art that we've seen from Toby, it's clear his chapter 2 design was the one that was always intended for him and is probably his true form, but at the same time, some of the newsletters and even the chapter 2 trailer use his first design. It could be to just to disguise himself around Toriel to keep her from questioning the nature of the dark world too deeply, but in both cases, she's clearly nowhere near them.

You can prefer either version of the boy, but these are NOT the same design. When and why was it decided for him to occasionally don such a radically different design in the first place? Was it just to make the "hey he's a goat" bit more striking when it happened? Is it to show that he's happier with more friends and people around him with how he goes from a silhouetted critter in a tattered robe standing in an empty town, wearing darker clothing?
