The futility Of legislation.
Independent Book Publishers Association Passes Code of Ethics
The Independent Book Publishers Association, a trade association that serves self published writers and indie publishers, has passed a code of ethics for their members. According to IBPA, the code of ethics was passed because "professionalism was lacking?
I ask the question. According to whom?
I answer the question; According to those trying to protect their livelihood.
I do not like this idea at all, who are they to decide such a thing. I am assuming that then Dickens would not be published as his spelling does not meet British standards and would never meet American standards. So if a new Dickens was to appear he would somehow be prevented from publishing? The great Russian authors? Many of whom did not understand nor speak English could have their greatest works declined due to a bad translator? Policing of this sort is not only silly but unproductive. You (IBPA) are trying to decide what we can and cannot write, what we can and cannot read. I do know that has happened before in history. Do you intend to burn the books that do not meet your standards.
Many people do not understand that the rules are changing in publishing much as the way they are at the moment in the film and television industries. Also as they did in the music industry five to ten years ago. Let that revolution happen. The good authors will be found the bad fall by the wayside. It is always the way.
