Ren had a gaze in his eye like he was looking out into the distance, when really the back wall of the bar was only about five feet away from his eyes. The holidays were ending and Ren was coming up on his second month in the city. It was quite the come down, everyone’s excited, anxious energy now replaced with the dull drone that came with the rest of the winter months. Ren had gotten better at recognizing what emotions were his own versus the rest of the world’s but they were still hard to ignore. His empathy was less like listening to a song over and over till the music just became a drone in the background-- other’s emotions, especially bigs ones, felt more like various alarms all going off at once. And that wasn’t even touching on the fact that Ainsley had stabbed him.
With a sigh he decided he needed a pick-me-up. Noticing another man at the bar, looking to be about his forties with dark brown hair. Ren got the bartenders attention. “Buy that man a drink on me.” He told him. Not like a ten dollar beer meant anything to his bank account. Ren watched the bartender bring the stranger a drink and then point a finger back at Ren, who just raised his own barely touched drink in acknowledgment. I’m a good person, Ren told himself and believed it.
