At William Brown Elementary, lawyers visit weekly to read to and tutor 3rd graders. An amazing partnership!
Each lawyer works with one student for a full year. While reading books matched to the child's reading level, they swap stories about their lives and families. Lewis said they learn to bring books the kids will devour.
"If they're going to read anything you put in front of them about sharks, you might as well bring books about sharks," Lewis said.
Brown elementary Principal Kenya Sadler said many of the students are not read to at home. Their family members either don't read or work until late at night.
“Our kids on average probably get 20 minutes a week to read to an adult in class," she said. "How often will a teacher hear each and every child read to give them useful feedback?"
