ahhhh shale thank you so much!! i use this style of typography quite often actually, it's one of my faves. here are the steps i've done to get this text effect (from this gifset):

first things first, i just typed out my text in a gray color, and set the blending mode to difference (exclusion could also work). i usually use white or gray text for this effect, but sometimes it also looks great if you use a color present in the gif (for example green) instead of white. i know for the first gif in this particular gifset the text was red, not white, for example. this is what i have, which is already halfway there:

then i am adding a color overlay matching the bg color of the gif (open the layer style window by double clicking the text layer), and i'm setting the blending mode to color dodge. i usually play around with color dodge, color, hard light, pin light, and multiple. i just use what looks best for the gif.

sometimes a gif doesn't need it, but i will also try out a gradient overlay on top of the color overlay. in this case i went for a green gradient with the blend mode set to multiply to add more depth to the text.

and finally i just added some black drop shadow to make the text more readable. and that's it!

i use this method really often and i usually just play around with blend modes and opacity percentages for the color and gradient overlays layer styles. i also have saved a couple of styles so i don't have to manually put in these settings everytime and have a base to start with.

I’m so glad my massive amount of bookmarks could come in handy for you, dear

First, I check the Anne with an E tag SEVERAL times a day. Occassionally I check the Anne of Green Gables tag, but the stuff is usually the same.

And then in those tags I hit the bookmark button and see what everyone else is reading and bookmarking. That helps bring about old material that’s deep in the archive that people are digging out, as well as show you what new stuff people are investing in. 

As you’ve done, read the bookmarks of authors you like or at least have decent taste. 

Similarly, go through an author’s full collection of work. 

Check on fanfiction.net!! That has a lot of good Anne of Green Gables stuff from several years ago. Catiegirl and her friends in particular are PHENOMENAL.

After a while, you can kinda tell based off of the tags/summary if the writing inside the story is going to be something you like.

I find that oneshots that are over 10k words long are always always good. I’m biased towards oneshots though lmao.

If a multi-chap fic seems promising, stick with it a lil bit and comment! Chances are, the author is gearing up to the good stuff and the beginning is a make or break time. If there’s not enough feedback on the early chapters, they might not continue to the good stuff. 

This is common sense, but sort by different things (comments, kudos, views) and then jump around the pages a little. Chances are you’ve probably read the fics with the most views and kudos already, but there’s a lot of stories that have the same amount of those things that get overlooked. 

Try stories with lower amounts of views and kudos! There was a time when the fandom was tiny and stories couldn’t get the feedback they deserved. (ie: the feedback I got on my stories tripled during S3 compared to during hiatus)

Lastly, if you read something you really like, blog about it! That way people are seeing new stuff and will add recs of their own!

I have no idea if this information was helpful or if y’all know this already. I guess my best advice would be to always check the tag several times a day! You’ll be able to keep track of postings or updates better. Until then, imma keep reading and bookmarking all I can!

hi shale!!! I can definitely try to explain it but tbh I just kept slapping new adjustment layers on until I got to something I liked lskdjfklsjd

under the cut, I'll try to explain how I went from the faded, almost all-yellow HDR coloring to this natural-looking skin tone and monochromatic background!

I'm just going to mention each adjustment layer and try to describe why I used them:

1. Brightness/Contrast — No adjustments, just set this layer to screen and it helps create an even brightness across the gif

(I'll keep that masked circle there so we can keep track of the original)

2. Color Balance — I just toggled the sliders and I honestly can't explain any rhyme or reason so I'll just include screenshots of my settings ldkjflsd

3. Levels 1 — I increased the highlights (the right-most slider) A LOT

4. Selective Color 1 — After doing stuff to get rid of yellow, I... added yellow lmao. But you can see the difference from the masked section. It feels more like a natural-looking yellow now imo

5. Selective Color 2 — This time, I used the red, yellow, neutral, and black channels. For red and yellow, I mainly focused on neutralizing the yellow by adding more cyan

6. Hue/Saturation 1 — This was just a baby hue/sat layer where I reduced the saturation of red by -7, pulled the hue slider down for red by -2 and for yellow by -4, and then I fully desaturated greens, cyans, blues, and magentas

7. Hue/Saturation 2 — In this layer, I fully desaturated the yellows and masked Anakin's face! Working towards making the background monochromatic

8. Hue/Saturation 3 — This time I fully desaturated the reds and fully darkened them, using my brush to apply these settings only to select parts of the background and Anakin's robes where I saw red peaking through

9. Levels 2 — In addition to using the RGB channel to brighten and add shadows, I also used the Red channel to make the shadows more cyan. You can see below how it made the background a bit more blue. Later, when I come back in with another hue/sat layer, I’ll be able to desaturate the cyan again and further neutralize the background.

10. Hue/Saturation 4 — Fully desaturated cyans and blues like I said I would! Now the background is neutral again

11. Hue/Saturation 5 — This time fully desaturating the yellows and masking out Anakin’s face. If you look at the difference between the image above and the one below, you can see the one above just had a tinge of yellow still in the background. And now that’s gone!

12. Selective Color 3 — I mainly added blacks to the red and yellow channels to deepen the shadows of Anakin’s face!

13. Levels 3 — Just making things a bit brighter again

14. Hue/Saturation 6 — His skin was looking a little too yellow, so I neutralized it a bit using the red and yellow channels

15. Levels 4 — Uh, brightening again sdlkfjsld

16. Hue/Saturation 7 — His skin was still looking a bit too saturated imo, so I desaturated the reds by -6 and desaturated the yellows by -28

17. Levels 5 — Lastly, there was some heavy grain in the upper corners from brightening the gif, and the dots were moving so violently that it was distracting, so I decided to darken it a bit only on those corners!
