What are your opinions of Steven Moffat's writing?
-Anonymous
Oh...
oh my god.
Why is someone asking me this?
Alright. I have... a lot of feelings about Steven Moffat's writing. I am SHIT at expressing them eloquently so here goes:
Moffat spins an excellent yarn.
Tells a good tale. What have you.
I liked him as a guest writer for Doctor Who. Not so much now that he's basically the showrunner. I HATE how much he overplays all the "twists" and shoves things in your face. I read an post by someone which summed it up perfectly but I'm too lazy to look for it now because I am fucking exhausted. But essentially, a lot of his writing is all flash and no substance. You can poke a MILLION plot holes in it. It's just... clever dialogue to hide a loose plot. Even in Sherlock.
He's also a smug bastard. Which has nothing to do with his writing. I just don't like him very much as a person. Which sometimes colors how I view his writing.
Now the MAIN thing I dislike about Steven's writing is it's sexist elements. It's the subtle things. Moffat is fucking obsessed with motherhood. Which, hey! Awesome. Motherhood is glorious, and cool and shit. But also... uhm.... not the only thing women are good for?
Since RTD left, the main plot arches of the show have basically been about baby-makin'. The whole "whoa she was pregnant the whole time!" Amy bit. Then the Christmas special this past winter, and now Amy's inability to bear children. I'm not going to comment much on that yet though because I haven't seen the ep. Now... this could be nothing. I don't know. But Steven says a lot of things. Sexist things. And then when he's called out on it, it's all "I'm not sexist, I HAVE A WIFE!" which is basically like saying, "I'm not racist, I have a black friend," while proceeding to say/do something racist.
And I'm going to cease making sense now. This is the worst written up thing ever. If you want to find out more of what people think, I'd suggest looking up critiques of his writing on google.
