“hey, are you dr. geiszler?” rowan asks, hesitation in her voice as she walks into the lab. by all technical accounts, she’s not supposed to be here. but she’s curious, and one of the pilots she’d been suiting up had told her about newt’s work. “my name’s rowan, i work with the jaegers - someone told me i could find you here.” she confesses, before blurting out the real reason she’s come in. “i just heard that you built your own pons system and i was kind of hoping i could pick your brain about it.”

rowan was a regular around this coffee shop. she always stopped in on her way to the garage, always with kind words to say to the baristas who served her. especially kili, he was always the nicest. he gave her an extra shot or two of espresso without her having to ask, and always gave her the best looking muffins. she liked him.

today, rowan walked in and was delighted to find kili behind the counter. “howdy, stranger!” she grinned. “the usual, please.” she dropped a few  dollars in the tip jar, as always, and shifted her weight on the balls of her feet as she waited. when kili handed the drink to her, she opened her mouth  to thank him, and her face went totally slack. memories flooded into her brain unwarranted and suddenly she was staring into the face of an old friend. the drink slipped from her fingers and splashed to the floor, spilling burning coffee down her chest as it went, and she jolted out of her reverie. “it’s- it’s you.”

“i already said you aren’t getting information from me, can i go now?” rowan sits at a table in what she suspects is an interrogation room. “some vacation this is turning out to be.”

“no, no, no!” rowan cries and lunges across the table, batting a circuit board out of reach. “don’t touch that!” eyes wide, she looks up at the man across from her. “what the hell are you doing?”

“listen, boys, you’re blowing this out of proportion. it was just a fluke, it won’t happen again.” she’s lying through her teeth. of course it will happen again, rowan programmed the bot to react to the word ‘pivot’ and instead crush the opposing bot’s head. her opponent didn’t take that lightly. instead, they began beating her senseless.

just as she is climbing back to her feet, raising her fists up to fight back, another presence makes itself known in the alleyway.

“hey! were you sent down by upstairs?” rowan asks as she wipes down the chair and table she uses as a makeshift ‘operating’ room. “you look a little banged up. nothin’ i can’t fix!” she’s remarkably cheery, considering her profession. “have a seat. i’m rowan.”

“hey!-” she walks over to the stranger a few feet from her and taps him on the shoulder. “you look like a pretty knowledgeable guy. i’m  a little out of my depth here. which one of these is better for a personal project?” rowan holds up the basket on her arm, containing two different kinds of cameras. “not anything weird, just like- filming robot fighting.”
