Hawkeye: Talk about a time you got a second chance.
When I finished undergrad, I knew I wanted to be a writer, but I didn’t think I could make a living at it. “Get a day job” is pretty typical advice for young writers, so I did. And for a while, it was fine -- I made decent money, I learned some stuff, I had some coworkers I liked. But eventually, I started to be miserable. I didn’t feel like I was really helping anyone. I didn’t agree with the way the company was run. I wanted out, but I didn’t know how, and I didn’t want to just quit the job (even though I fantasized about it every morning).
Then I went to a weekend writing conference. It was only a day long, but I met other writers there--real people, really trying to write professionally. I sat down with someone who actually worked in the publishing industry, showed them some manuscript pages, and they said, “Yeah, you could get this published.”
That was my second chance -- my second chance to choose what I loved and valued over what would keep a roof over my head and Netflix on my tv.
I’ve worked a lot of jobs since then, and written a lot of words, and I still don’t have a book with my name on it sitting on the self. I’ve thought about that cushy, stable, stultifying job and thought about how much more money I’d have if I’d kept working there. But I’ve never regretted that decision. It’s brought me not just writing, but a whole network of friends and experiences I would never have come across before (including the people I’ve met here).

Could you really consider the companions to be pets though? :) That would be amazing, but they choose you. lol (sorry, rarely get to geek out about Heralds of Valdemar, slowly getting more of my friends into it)
No, you’re right, they’re absolutely not ‘pets’ per se. I want a Companion to Choose me. They were the first fictional animals that sprang to mind when I was answering the meme, because I’ve wanted to be Chosen and become a Herald of Valdemar since I was, like, 16.
A Companion would give me shit every time I call them a pet and I kindasorta really want that.
Um. Um. You’ve read the Valdemar books? Can I dance around with you now? Because I feel the need to do a dance of glee. I needed SO MUCH MORE of Keren and Ylsa and Sherrill, and I needed Ylsa to hang around because she was so freaking awesomesauce. I wanted to be a courier Herald so bad.
I’ve read almost all of them, up through Skif and Alberich’s separate series. I LIVED in those books in high school and college.

The next part of Distraction is with my beta now. Yay! It’s not the final part, like I thought it’d be, but it’s a whole hella lotta resolution, so I think people will be happy!

Sorry that I continue to be a bit MIA, but I’ve been going to bed early this week so I can get up extra early and write in the morning before work. Crazy, I know, but it helps me get in even more writing time, so we do what we must!
