When Lyra shuts the door to her apartment room behind her, she's all dried tears and a pain in her chest that hurts so bad it's like someone's clawing at it. She clutches her laptop tightly, knowing it was Red who managed to catch it so it wouldn't be damaged. It was Red who brought it back to her.
Chikorita and Marill paws at Lyra's ankles as if they're asking if she's okay. She forces a smile, says, "I'm okay." before walking to her bedroom and flopping down onto the mattress and burying her face into her pillow.
Why did things go so wrong? Why does it have to be this way?
It doesn't take long for the tears to roll down again, doesn't take long for her to just crycrycry into her pillow and sob so loudly as if she's releasing all of her emotions at once.
Her heart feels heavy and she doesn't know how to carry it. It's her fault for pushing Red away like that. Her fault for always being like this.
And it hurts.
And she blames herself. It's my fault.
Wants to say, "I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry."
But she can't because she knows Red won't believe her or even listen to her.
