We Need to Stop
Where has it all gone wrong in the goth YouTube community? I was so excited when I first stumbled upon it because, let’s face it, it isn't that easy to find goths outside the internet these days. Not unless you find a concert or music festival, anyway, and that just isn't an option for everyone. For the most part, goth YouTubers spent the last few years supporting one another and generally keeping to themselves. If anyone had an issue with someone else, most of the time they just kept it to themselves. Now we have this shitshow of people calling each other out like the ever popular Cancelled Culture of regular YouTubers. I had hoped so much that we would steer clear of that mentality, but it seems as though we are drowning in it these days.
I understand that not all of us agree with one another’s definition of what goth is, and I realize that making sure it is about the music FIRST and the fashion and lifestyle SECOND is important. However, when someone seems to be falling off the rails when it comes to that, I don’t think we should be tackling the issue by calling them out and claiming that they are fakes and essentially bad people just because they have lost their way. Instead, we should try to rise above the issue.
See bigger goth YouTubers putting more emphasis on material items than music? Make a huge playlist on your YouTube channel about the music then. Go on and on about the bands people tend to forget and help the younger generation of goths learn how to enjoy those bands. Make a video that highlights where the remaining goth bands will be hosting gigs over the next year. Make goth music playlists for various occasions. For example: Goth Wedding Playlist, Goth Driving Playlist, Goth Work Playlist, etc. Be sure to share the hell out of those videos and use really good keywords so people in the community can find your videos.
If someone who is big in the subculture is starting to piss you off you have every right to be upset, but you shouldn't try to tear them down as a result. Instead, move forward and become the goth YouTuber you think we all deserve.
Please stop hurting one another. As goths we have all had to suffer through a great deal of bullying from people who didn't want to understand us. Surely we should be a subculture full of people who are willing to hear each other out and lift each other up.
This has been a PSA for the goth YouTube community.
