Actually I do recommend like, taking a scene from an older piece of writing and without looking at it again trying to rewrite it. I think doing that and then looking at the two pieces and seeing the differences can really help you see that you are improving over time, even if it's hard to pick up on the incremental changes as they happen

Here's a fun thing to try if you, like me (a) always have 1800 WIPs going at once and (b) never seem able to actually complete any of those WIPs ever:

Pick like. 3-6 of the WIPs you're most focusing on

Assign them numbers at random

Roll a "however many WIPs you have"-sided die

Whichever number you land on, write five sentences of that WIP. No excuses. No escape.

Rinse and Repeat

The first time I tried this, this is what I discovered: if you can make yourself write at least five sentences of a WIP, you'll probably end up writing more than that.
