i'll be honest, i actually enjoy a good miscommunication trope. humans pretty much suck at communicating, and they tend to double down rather than risk facing either rejection (if their interpretation was correct) or their flaws (often necessary if they were incorrect). it can be painful to read at times but i genuinely believe even the absolute dumbest miscommunication can be perfectly realistic.
the problem is that they're so rarely good. if your pov character comes out of a conversation that i as the reader interpreted as perfectly benign or possibly even pleasant going "so clearly he hates me," then (a) you have failed at the concept of "pov character" and (b) you're fucking up the trope. if your character's getting "he hates me" from an interaction, i should also be picking up on some "oooh, he hates you" vibes from the page. you should be showing me enough, in between the dialogue, for me to be on the same page as the pov character. give me the context. show me the facial expression he's misinterpreting. the history between them that makes this otherwise pleasant comment feel like a slap in the face.
if i can tell it's a misunderstanding as it's happening, it's not done well. i should not be rereading the passage going "how the fuck did he get to that conclusion?" i should only be going "you fucking idiot" from the beginning if i have passages from both characters' pov and even then the reasons they're being fucking idiots should be entirely understandable.
a pet peeve of mine in fantasy is when they talk about the Magic(tm) like studying the magic, having the magic, or like, supernatural powers but where everyone has superpowers in that civilization. and. and.
elves wouldn't say "we have superior vision", they'd say "yeah humans are practically blind".
in my pocket i have a piece of metal with a little window that is powered by the energy of running water and that contains all the information in the world
and we call that a cell phone. i play project makeover on mine.
any animal would call that Magic(tm). be we don't. because it's not magic for us.

Absolutely a sucker for the “ARE YOU HURT” once over. The wandering hands, frantically checking for blood or pain just SOMETHING. ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIED of what they might find while searching. The panicked look on the face of the person doing the checking, the glossy, confused “I’m fine” from the person being checked. HOO BOY just inject that shit right into my veins
i think we as a society need to use cell phones/laptops/cars/backpacks to flesh out characters
like. a character has a cracked phone screen and a dozen stickers and a glittery case and a photo of their dog as a background. that says so much
or a character has a completely plain phone with no decorations and a default home screen and all the contacts are people's first names with no profile photos. except for one contact which is a stupid nickname and a shot of someone taken at a very unflattering angle. you know?
or cars!!! someone who has a disgusting car, with trash everywhere and mud caking the seats, but the passenger seat is always clean, because someone else always cleans it for them.
this has potential to become a blorbo post so now i want everyone to describe what they think their blorbo's phone/laptop/car/backpack looks like in the tags because i like reading these things
From my experience - this is a BIG part of character design. A character isn't just a face or a body, it's a series of choices.
Every piercing is a decision they made, every tattoo involved sitting for hours and then carefully caring for it afterward. Do they wear bracelets? What kind? Do they have meaningful trinkets they carry around, or are they minimalist and spartan?
Characters impact the world around them and customize their spaces. Pay attention to those details and you'll have a much more fleshed out being to play with :)

you'll get the urge as an artist or a writer to say out loud the things you're worried about "the proportions are off" "kind of out of character" "i'm not good at summaries" "didn't get as much detail as i wanted" "i made a mistake and here's how" and that's the self-conscious part of your brain telling you "it's bad and if you don't tell them you know it's bad then they'll think you're stupid" but you've got to ignore that little voice and pretend you think it's good or else that little voice is going to ruin your life
i hate this weird trend in fandom where subtext is seen as a Bad Thing and is only done if the creators are too cowardly to commit to showing something. i hate to break it to you but nuance and layers are what make stories interesting, if you have no subtext then you have a very flat story
sometimes things are subtext because they don’t quite fit the tone of the story, or because the story isn’t about that (and if they showed it outright they would have to take time to explore it), or sometimes the characters aren’t ready to face it, or sometimes subtext is just the right choice for this specific story, or SOMETIMES it’s just fun and interesting to have underlying themes and implications!!!!
also just because it’s subtext doesn’t mean it’s not deliberate or not meant to be part of the story. “well if they WANTED it to be canon they should’ve SAID SO” some of us can understand implications. some of us enjoy thinking about the media we consume and don’t just want everything handed to us on a silver platter. “wow i can’t believe the writers didn’t even realize what this implies” im going to beat you to death with hammers
your writing does not have to be outstanding or exceptional. seriously, I read books all the time with just average writing, maybe some of the minor characters are one dimensional and cliched, maybe the dialogue is a little cheesy, maybe the plot is a little shaky, but the characters and their dire situation have hooked me. your story doesn’t have to be 5 stars to be worth writing and sharing and it will find the people who will love it.
battle couples has gotta be one of my favorite tropes though. The “you got me?” “Yeah, I got you.” The kiss for good luck. Fighting alongside each other for so long they know every strength and weakness. The dichotomy of being fucking terrifying to their enemies, but so soft with each other. When one is in danger and the other goes feral, protects them at any cost. When everything is over and done, it’s all “let me see where you’re hurt,” and washing off the dirt and blood.
I love a character raised to be a weapon as much as the next guy. But what really gets me is a character raised to be a shield. Who can’t fathom being needed—or even being wanted— beyond keeping others safe. Who believe they are alive only to insure someone doesn’t die. no matter the cost. Characters who self-sacrifice not because they think they deserve it, but because no one else does deserve it, and it’s their job to protect.
Characters who’ve been told that’s why your important. Your worth something because this other person/ thing is important, and you are here solely to keep them safe.
Bonus points if it’s not a legitimate job they’ve been given. Maybe at one point it was, but now that they are free from it, they haven’t given up that mentality. No one is forcing or asking them to do this, but they need to. They need to in order to be deserving.

i have hundreds of thousands of words of writing asks on this blog spanning a decade. i've read dozens of craft books. i've been teaching creative writing for 8 years. and "where's the wretch" might be the best craft advice i've ever heard.
