So here's another mini-rant, eBay related again.
I decided to upgrade studio monitors, because although the ones I had were made well and such, they were a terror to mix on - too hyped in response.
So I find a set used on eBay that I was heavily considering, the Event Studio Precision 8's... Having previously used Event monitors, I find them excellent for mixing, even their mid-range offerings, and this series is certainly a few steps above that.
So I find someone selling a pair on eBay for a fairly good price, with free shipping. The picture the seller posted was terrible... It was a dark, cell-phone photo of only ONE of the monitors, upside-down to top it off... There also wasn't much in the ways of a description of the monitors... So I e-mail the seller asking if there are any flaws of any kind, condition, etc... He responds with something that made absolutely no sense... He proceeded to message me again with a little bit of a better response, which kind of meant something along the lines of "they're like new"... So I give it a little time, cause I can sense the guy is a bit of a dip-shit. He continues to assure me that they're like new, and he updates the listing a little by adding a few extra words. So after this, and seeing that there aren't any others I'm looking for on eBay at the moment, I decide to jump the gun and buy them.
I purchase them and pay immediately. The next morning, my inbox is flooded with e-mails from the guy asking me to call him ASAP. Now, when I first wake up, I'm in no shape to try to communicate with someone, so I waited till I got to work to call him. Turns out the box was too big/heavy for the US Postal Service and since the guy lived somewhat close, he was going to deliver them to me. Turned out he was doing a job not far from my job, so he brought them to me that day.
Of course, while talking to him and after putting the massive box in my car already, he informs me that one of the tweeters is pushed in, "but it's not punctured!" he explains. Regardless, I would not have bought the fucking things if the tweeter was pushed in, it effects the frequency response, phase and some other factors... So, later on after work, I bring them into the studio to set them up. Low and behold, they're covered in fucking stickers! Not only are they stickers, but they're the stickiest fucking stickers. So much for them being "like new"!
I ended up getting all the stickers off, though some residue remains (which Goo-Gone should fix, when I get some). I also manage popping the one tweeter out as best as possible, using the "tape trick". The problem is, I'm left trying to find replacement tweeters for the fucking things, as that still bothers me and I can tell the difference between the two. Of course, they're not made anymore, so finding parts for them is no easy task.
Fuckin' A.
