3 Big Tips: Interior Paint
Refreshing interior paint is one of the quickest ways to bring a tired room back to life and update design. Color can set a mood and unify the different elements in a room. Color can also help make a small space feel larger and make a large space feel cozy. It is something any homeowner can easily undertake on their own with professional-looking results. To get started, here are 3 tips:
1. Color Choices: Pro designers recommend picking color last! First, identify fixed items (ie floor color) and furniture and how you want the wall colors to complement those items. Second, identify the type of natural light you will have in that room - bright morning light? Soft afternoon light? Third, coordinate your choices into a whole-house color palette for seamless transitions from room to room.
2. Finish Choices: The finish that you select will have an impact on the color. A flat or matte finish (often used on ceilings and bedroom walls) absorbs light which can result in darker or more muted tones. A semigloss finish (often used in kitchens and bathrooms) has the opposite effect of reflecting light and making colors more vibrant. And in between these both are eggshell and satin finishes which tend to be truest to the color on a paint sample.
3. Test Your Choices: The little paint chips you can take home from the store are a start, but you will need something larger to truly evaluate a color. Some paint manufacturers or stores will offer larger chip sizes. If you can take home a small sample of the paint itself (in the finish you plan to use!), try painting a poster board which you can easily observe in different parts of the room. Or paint 2 coats directly on a portion of your wall.
