One of the world’s foremost experts on Latin, Father Foster was a monk who looked like a stevedore, dressed like a janitor and swore like a sailor.
One of the great unrealized dreams of my life was to take one of Father Foster’s summer courses in Latin. What a character and a genuine treasure for breathing new life into an ancient language and creating generations of new “Latin Lovers”.
(And props to the Times for noting his age in Roman numerals in his obituary!)
