i have a lot of conflicting thoughts/opinions abt The South but i dont know its very bizarre the way The North talks about the south and most people dont even think twice abt the Things They God Damn Say
i was talking about the podcast s-town to someone and they were like “yeah i was completely blown away that someone with that accent was so intelligent” and i was like ok bitch half my family has that accent also jesus christ what ?
so many middle class white kids from like new hampshire are like “id never go down there” “im afraid to go to the south lol” — dont get me wrong there is 4 sure more of a threat of violence for people color (esp Black people) and/or ppl who are visibly gender or sexuality non-conforming — but like ??? im not talking abt this actual tangible fear from ppl at risk, its more of like an ew gross “fear” from ppl who live in upstate new york but also have beach houses in the ~nice parts of south carolina
its a morality thing but in a gross self-congratulatory way like oh im from boston we’re not racist or homophobic up here…………. and y’all r so transparent like u dont care abt gay ppl its a way to mask ur moral judgment surrounding access to wealth + education + language….. y’all are literally making moral judgments based on accents !!!! and im guilty of this too the y’all includes me
like im just thinking abt this bc i saw an article abt california having another travel ban to more southern states with anti-LGBT legislation idk i just dont see what that is doing ?? i dont know there are lots of LGBT kids in alabama and mississippi u kno and like completely disengaging with these places is not the answer. i mean i know literally the south tried to become another country so it makes sense that there’s a huge sense of disengagement but like…………………… idk also the only moral judgment relevant in this conversation is that the north doesnt have sweet tea and that’s a sin against god so y’all can get off ur damn high horses already lmao
