how does convergent evolution work? what makes it different from a regional form?

OOOOH very good question! very very good question and i’m glad someone asked.

so, let’s take an easier to see example first:

regional variants are a pokemon of the same species that have adapted to another climate or environment; in this example, vulpix, initially native to kanto, are also found as alolan vulpix (natively known as keokeo), who have adapted to the cold weather of mount lanakila, thus also adopting the ice type. i don’t even know why they did this, though, alola is warm in literally any other place. perhaps it was cooler all over at one point...?

as for convergent evolution:

let’s get this straight: these pokemon are not the same species. one’s a water blobby guy, the other’s a fungus

convergent evolution is, to put it simply, two separate species of pokemon adapting a similar body plan by necessity. for example, tentacool has these tentacles to, of course, swim and propel itself, but for toedscool the shape of their legs, which are mostly just blobs of muscle, are perfect for running. both shapes are equally good for hiding in their respective environments!

I may have chosen Oshawott for my starter in Pokemon Legends Arceus because I love Pokemon Black/White (and especially the sequels), but Hisuian Typhlosion will always hold a special place in my heart because it easily has the best personality of any regional form (in my opinion). I love this adorable fire weasel <3

Earth Day inspired me to draw a Pokémon's grass/ground type variation, this lil exercise even got me through a massive art slump, I'm shook...

Anyway, I chose Stufful and came up with the idea to turn it into a well-loved teddy bear, I love it so much ç_ç

Oh, plenty!

For today though... How about we go another route entirely, and look at the Duskull line.

Now, Dusclops might look a bit different here, but interestingly, its only the male version that has a Regional Tann Variation! These Dusclops are quiet, shy, and like to hoard all manner of things under their ‘cloaks’. What they look like under said cloaks is a mystery, but it is likely they match normal Dusclops in that they are hollow underneath!

These Dusclops also prefer to keep their hands under their ‘cloak’ feature unless in use, so if you don’t battle with them, you might not even know that they have them!

However, the evolution varies from Dusclops even more when they evolve again, and results in Anskoull! These Ghost type Pokemon are all male, and local legend says they carry the dead to their final resting place. If you see one, your hair may turn white overnight... If you’re not brought along with them, that is!

Anskoull evolves by giving it a Reaper Cloth, and travelling with it! This is likely where the legend of Anskoull’s riding in wagons and taking souls with them originated from!

Their ‘hair’ is actually tendrils, of the same material as Dusclops’, and are prehensile! Basically, they work similarly to arms, and can grasp and move things at will when in use.

I know these aren’t quite as cute as the Skitty Variants though, so I am sorry if you were expecting something similar! Still, I think they’re pretty neat, and I hope you enjoyed learning about them! I’ll try to write about something cuter next time.

Hit and/or miss

I love collecting quirks of English where variation hides in plain sight. We know many of the ways that different varieties of English differ, but sometimes there are differences that no one expects, and lead to intense discussion (for example, where your instep is, or which part of your face you use to frown).

Another example of this genre came up when Steph Campisi emailed me while working on a copywriting project for a client in the USA. As an Australian English speaker, Steph had always used hit and miss, while her American colleagues were using hit or miss.

Google n-gram confirmed variation in UK and US English, with and being the preferred form in the UK these days, and or found in US English. This didn’t appear to always be the case - hit or miss was also more common in UK texts in Google’s corpus until a couple of decades ago.

The OED has hit or miss going back to at least the early 1600s, while the earliest hit and miss is 1897, which also fits with the n-gram viewer.

An very unscientific Twitter poll confirmed a general divide between North America and UK/Aus/NZ English, and people who use the hit or miss variety were confused by how something can be hit and miss. I think that hit and miss  is a paraphrase of something like “(sometimes it is a) hit and (sometimes it is a) miss”,  while the or variant is something like “(each time it is either a) hit or miss”.

The cousin of the Sinnoh Frosslass, it came over with Sinnohnian immigrants and adapted to the island life. Locals often refer to it as 'The Green Gulch Lady' after a local legand of a woman who lost one of her children while visiting a gulch and died of heartbreak and still searches for her lost baby.

They are notorious for taking lost children and are blamed for when children wander off and get lost. Their pretty whispery voices sound like a motherly lullabye and their movement is reimisant of dancing, they appear sometimes at large parties and take children from there. It's flowers are very dangerous when in full bloom because they release a sleeping powder that can knock you out for days. It steals scraps of cloth to decorate itself to appear more and more effeminate and an effective lure. It's been known to violently attack men.
