AU! AU! AU! AU! AU!

Five AU’s! Fun!

First one up, is one of my canon-divergent AU’s for Regulus. Basically, it goes off the idea that Regulus doesn’t die? Not quite at least. He exists between life and death, in the inferi cave. So when, Albus and Harry go to retrieve the locket, and Regulus crawls out, unaware of the fact that so long has passed? There is a lot of complications. For one, Regulus has no one. His brother has died (telling him that was Not Good. He was very close to searching out Bellatrix and killing her.). The rest of his family is either, a) part of the Deatheaters, the people he can’t go back to, without dying, and they’ve grown up anyways. He’s 18, mentally and physically. Everyone he knew is either dead, or in their 30′s. So new name, and he joins the order, it’s not like he has much other choice.

Number two is… defection AU. This one is where Regulus and/or Barty, do precisely that. They defect. Instead of going after the horcrux alone, they go to the order first. With the support of at least one other person (who defects depends on who goes with), they manage to retrieve the horcrux without anyone dying! Score one for the good guys? So yeah, that’s that one. In theory, Regulus manages to repair his relationship with his brother.

I can’t really do any for Ilya, because he has none as of yet. Let’s go Albus!

So, it’s a character specific one, but I really want to do one, and had a thread where Albus, at like 18, just months post-Gellert ends up messing with a time-turner, or (time) magic he ought not be messing in, and it sends him 50 years into the future, where he meets young, charismatic Tom Riddle. And Tom, is well, exactly what attracted Albus to Gellert, and the anger and the hurt is still fresh enough, but without the wisdom that comes with time. So the idea that maybe he shouldn’t get involved with (morally skewed) revolutionaries hasn’t quite sunken in yet? And let’s face it, Tom would use this opportunity. Access to a young Dumbledore? It’s like a gift of fate. So I yeah. I really want to do something where Albus ends up co-Dark Lording with Tom. Albus has grey morals already, this would push him properly evil, and I love it.

Another one of my character’s ends up siding with Tom Riddle verse? Cassandra’s. In her’s, she is still engaged to Bartemius Sr. and she hates that fact. She’s smart, and not terribly ambitious, but enough that she catches Tom’s eye. It’s easy enough to convince her parents he would be a much more suitable match… alternately, elopement. Somehow, she ends up married to Tom. He’s still Tom. Still cold, and very Slytherin, but he’s hers. And he’s brilliant, and listens to her input. It’s a lot of Hades/Persephone vibes for it. Fun, at any rate. Granted, I seem to be a fan of a lot of ships where one person is legit dark/evil and either drags the other participant down with them, or the other person goes willingly.

And for the final verse! I already added this into an ask for this meme but damnit it, I like this verse, so it gets to go again. Barty’s survival verse! The base, start is; after the war, and the dementors are no longer used, provided the human body is still alive, some people regained their souls. Barty is one of the lucky few. It’s a bit of a trying time getting out of Azkaban. But he does, either by proving his innocence for some of his crimes, or by being able to pull the ‘I’ve paid penance, I lost my soul, I’m a changed man, give me a break’ card. So he gets out, and he doesn’t know what to do. He has no money, no friends, and no family (his cousin doesn’t count. He couldn’t do that to him. He has a family, has a life, Barty made his choice when he was 15, besides, the guilt would kill him). No respectable business would hire him, so he goes to knockturn alley, and Borgin and Burkes hires him. He’s smart, if a little broken, and good at remembering the stock, there are worse jobs. It keeps a roof over his head. It’s a small, cramped apartment. But it’s home. A lot of life is living one day at a time.

Okay... I’m caved. This is me writing a meta on the Black brother relationship according to how I write it... This might be long, or split into several parts.

When Regulus and Sirius were small, they were really close. They were close in age, and their parents were at best, negligent, at worst (and most likely) properly abusive. It was survival. There were so few other people, so Sirius was Regulus’ only person he could properly rely on.

And then Sirius went to Hogwarts, and he befriended the Gryffindors. Aside from feeling like he was being left behind and forgotten, Sirius was gone for most of the year. Suddenly it had stopped being the brothers Black against the world, and felt more like Regulus against the world. The first year wasn’t bad at least. Not really. Sirius was still his brother, even if he was adorned in red and gold, he taught him spells, and told him stories of the marauders, and Regulus would listen in rapt attention.

But then, Regulus had gone to Hogwarts, and things went wrong. He was sorted into the wrong-right-wrong-right house. He was surrounded by purist views, and darker magic, and Sirius had gotten farther away. Regulus didn’t blame him, not then, the anger came later. His first year he didn’t notice the growing distance as much, school was exiting, and he got to be a part of it. During the holidays he still played with Sirius, and he was still Sirius’s little brother.

Second year was very much the same, as was third, and fourth. Their parents got more abusive, and Sirius became more distant, but they weren’t antagonistic yet. Then fifth year came, and Sirius ran away to go to the Potters, to leave him behind. Sirius stopped being his big brother after that, because he wasn’t there. In one night what had been building for years crashed and burned. Regulus didn’t want to resent Sirius for it, he knew, logically, that it was the only option Sirius had. But that didn’t make it easier, and with Sirius gone, his parent started pushing him to join the Deatheaters, to follow his cousin Bellatrix.

It was easy to say no for the first little while, the first year even, but come sixth year, he couldn’t say no anymore. And he caved, severing any chance he had at repairing his relationship with his brother.

By the end of that year Sirius had graduated, and had been gone from home even longer. Regulus had managed to perfect his facade and it wasn’t like he could go to Sirius for comfort anymore. So instead he pushed his anger and his love for his brother to the back of his head, and had focused on the hate, and the apathy consuming his life instead. It was less painful, less that could be taken advantage of.

He pushes thoughts of the elder Black far away during the war. There is no place for sentiment as a Deatheater. Regulus had considered asking for his help to go to the cave. He din’t do it, couldn’t do it, but he had considered.

The thoughts of Sirius came unbidden when he was in the cave though. Regret at letting the bond between them deteriorate and vanish, anger at Sirius for letting it happen, anger at himself for letting it. The only reason he made it through the potion was the inner voice of his brother encouraging him on. If he had muttered delirious apologies to the specter with him no one would know. The thing Regulus regretted most however, was the fact Sirius would never know what he had done.

Regulus knows it’s wrong. The Black family may value ‘toujours pur’ above all else, but even they value it only so far as it produces pure heirs. He and Sirius (Sirius, the brother who was already so... difficult, with his half-blood friends, and Gryffindor pride) weren’t that, and even then, the actual marriages within the family were mostly contained to cousins (though... that was a technicality at best most times, with how much inter-marriages the pure-blood families had).

Regulus knows Sirius sleeps with other people, may even love some of them, and he’s pretty certain that Sirius does love James Potter, but that never mattered to him. Ultimately, Sirius would come home during the breaks, and for all the issues that came with that, it was the two of them against their parents, which when they were younger, usually felt more like the two of them against the world.

Regulus has spent enough nights in his brother’s bed to believe that Sirius loved him and that the dalliances, and the other people were simply... a way to play into an image, a distraction, something else. He’s never seen Sirius pay more than a week’s worth attention to nay of them (rumours in Hogwarts spread fast, everyone always knew who was seeing who), and it’s easy to tell himself that they don’t matter.

And then Sirius leaves home, and leaves Regulus, and it’s enough to make him question every time his brother said he loved him, and every time his brother told him that he would always be there to protect him, because suddenly the one good, constant thing in his life was gone. It’s easier than Regulus wants to admit, to close himself off that little bit more, to fill the role his parents have decided is now his.

He sees Sirius only twice after he leaves home, outside school, and the desire to yell at him, and tell the whole world how good, perfect, Gryffindor Sirius was just as bad as the rest of them. The look of horror on Sirius’ (and James’ for that matter) face, might almost be enough to make it all worth it. His brother already hated him, how much more could that have done? (The desire bubbles under the surface, and he ignores it both times because even if Sirius had decided that he no longer loved him, Regulus was never quite as capable of pretending they had never been... something).

He never does, and the secret dies with Sirius, and with him. They had hidden it from the world, and so it’s death would remain in the dark too.

The second child born to Orion and Walburga Black, Regulus was the younger brother to Sirius Black. Originally intended as a spare heir, in case Sirius couldn't live up to family expectations Regulus spent his formative years, and years at Hogwarts perfecting a front as the perfect pureblood heir. After his brother left that only cemented. Sorted into Slytherin house, Regulus took the dark mark under pressure from his friends and family. It was about six months later when he found out about the locket of Slytherin and started planning his betrayal. He spent the next six months planning, and went to take the Horcrux. It went badly. And Regulus was dragged below ink waters by the Inferi.

Lungs Full of Missing Water

Regulus walks into the cave fully intending to not live long enough to see the morn, but then he wakes up and morning has come and he’s in his bed at Grimmauld Place. Kreacher, loyal to him until the end, had saved him, minutes-- seconds before he would have died. It was a blessing and a curse, with the Locket of Salazar Slytherin, it confirmed his thoughts that the Dark Lord was no longer entirely of this world, but it also meant there was no where for him to go. the mark on his arm meant he couldn’t go to Sirius, and the Deatheaters would kill him. Instead he sets out on his own to find and destroy the Horcruxes. he only wakes up screaming most nights.

Between Heaven and Earth

Regulus dies that night in the cave. Until two decaes alter when he crawls out, heaving for breath at the feet of Albus Dumbledore ans Harry Potter. Alone, confused, and eighteen, they take him with, but he doesn’t belong here. Sirius is dead, his family is grown, and he- he is a man out of time. There’s nowhere else to go, so he joins with the Order of the Phoenix. The war isn’t over, and he can help. So he does.

Between What is Right and What is Easy

The truth was never simple, except when it was, and in the case of Voldemort, there was no doubt he was evil. Powerful, and potentially revolutionary, yes, but not good, and certainly not a saviour. He was no longer truly human though, he’d split his soul into parts and scattered them. Finding the location of the first one was easy, he had used Kreacher to place it, so he simply abandoned all he had known to go find his brother. Sirius was good, Sirius could help. Convincing the Order of his facts wasn’t hard, so he got the Locket, and for a moment, it seemed like maybe it wasn’t hopeless.

📂📂📂📂📂📂 I WILL NOT BE BEATEN

1. Cassandra prefers a lighter blue colour than her son, more happy with a cobalt/blue mix than her son’s preference for more navy/denim shades.

2. Albus has had multiple periods of insomnia throughout his life, the duration and intensity varies.

3. Regulus’ view on romance is an odd mix of hopeless romantic, and belief that true love doesn’t exist.

4. Barty, while incredibly good at interpreting text, is hopeless at writing it. He’s far better with purely factual essays. Anything involving his opinion makes him struggle more.

5. Ilya considers the whole British wizarding war utterly stupid. He doesn’t much like Voldemort, granted, he’s mostly just glad he hasn’t attacked the rest of Europe.

6. Icarus’ religious beliefs are… complicated. He knows Gods exist, he’s met them, he became a myth because of them, but… he hasn’t prayed to them in millennia, and his faith is their abilities grows smaller every life. They did get him burned at the stake though. The closest thing he could describe it as is lapsed Hellenism.

Barty has small-medium feet. Nothing too small, but on the smaller size of average. As for style, is none an option? Preferably he avoids them, they aren’t comfortable, and not the choice for curling up with a book. Otherwise, he goes for shoes at a cross between dress ones and casual. He only owns maybe two pairs, so they can be used as comfortable everyday footwear, and aren’t casual enough to get any unkind remarks from his father.

Regulus on the other hand just has average sized feet, and wears dress shoes. He owns a simple black pair. He’s gotten used to the discomfort that can be present by wearing them for long periods of time, and they are respectable. He’s expected to always seem put-together, so this works.

Cassandra, like her son, has smallish feet. As a child she wore largely ballet flats. They were easy to take off and put on on, as well as not being too terribly uncomfortable. As she got older she began to wear more heals. Not for comfort, but because it was what was expected of a pureblood wife. She was supposed to entertain people, and put up a good front. She still wore a large number of flats however.

Ilya, has a bit more variety than Regulus, but it’s also decently formal. More shoes built for a harsher, colder climate however. He has a pair of boots for example. As for foot size, they’re pretty average.

And lastly, Albus has average-large feet. They aren’t gigantic, but they are larger than average. He has had a large variety of shoes in his life. As a child they were far more boot-like, and casual. It was more comfortable and more practical. As he got older they became more formal, although bordering on the line between casual and formal at times. By the time he is in Harry’s era, they are more casual, but more interesting colours, more blues, greens and purples, as compared to the tamer grey/blacks of his earlier years.

Regulus/James

This is one of the ones on my ‘eh…?’ list. It’s not bad, it’s not my otp, but I can see it. But as someone that writes Regulus, I want to write it, largely because Regulus would take that relationship and springboard off it into repairing his relationship with his brother. (”What do you mean? I don’t miss my blood-traitor of a brother.” Lies.)

Plus having someone that isn’t just a manipulative/user/abusive/etc. would be good for Regulus, and his morality.
