The sledge is done! It is an Atha Tools (sleuthing by @w_squared2) 14 pound, strait peen blacksmith striking hammer. I paid ~$5 for it at a salvage place and it took all of an hour to clean up and rehandle with a hickory handle I have had for too long. I cut a wedge out of walnut and the smeared the head and handle with @axe_and_anvil. The overall length is now 25” and I put it on top of my 110 pound Swedish anvil for a size comparison. I have a theme running on #handtooltuesday : handle replacement. Today I swapped out a cracked and split handle on a nice German Sandvik hatchet that a neighbor gave me. 20 minutes of fitting, some heel reshaping, and an application of machine oil for the head and walnut oil for the handle. While I was at it, I oiled my 2.25oz boys axe as well.
