“ you don’t get a choice this time. i’m helping you. ”
It takes control to not slap his hand away, but it takes the man’s courage to grab onto her hand. For a moment, she does not hear Diluc’s voice but sees red - blood, fire, screams, her hands, Yaroslav, Derek, Matthew, Svetlana, Andrea, Evgenia, Hae-Won, blood in the snow and blood in her mouth; she was choking on it then as she was falling down from the cliff. All red, all blurry, her side hurting. No, this is all in the past and Diluc's presence brings her back when he grabs her hand and leads her forward, out of this place. The scent of blood is real just like his scarlet hair, his eyes are flaring just as brightly as the torches in this cave where bandits made their lair. She could’ve taken them all by herself, but it seemed like the hero had to make his appearance right before the chains around her neck were broken and the monster was unleashed.
You don’t have a choice... That’s what life told me by bringing me back, Zarina thinks to herself as eyes stare at his back. Their footsteps echo in the cave, the bodies of knocked out or even killed bandits lay there without the ability to get in their way. The marks of Diluc’s Pyro vision are seen and it makes her taste bitter ash in her mouth, she feels the void suck out all of her emotions once again: empty, hungry, bored.
His salvation will be within flames, either burning himself for someone or choosing self-destruction. Those who live to save others before themselves die first, she knows it all too well. The memory of Svetlana putting herself in harm's way to protect several of their teammates, the army falling down at the betrayal, stabs in the back making the strongest warriors fall down and succumb to their wounds. Sokolova feels the same while looking at Diluc now, his determination making her remember Victor's stubbornness when he told her he'll protect her and he'll help her. Her brother, her family, her last light. It makes her wonder if people like Ragnvindr were there, would she not be in this situation? Zarina remembered his inquiry about salvation, being saved has never been one of her checks on the list. When was the last time someone was so stubborn and so warm to reach another? Hah, as if it would change anything now.
“ Diluc, ” she has been obedient, following him and not saying anything against his offer of help. He has already gotten ridden of those who were in the way out and she knows he is a skilled warrior. She noticed it before, in the way he walks and in the way he dresses, in the way he talks and in the way he glances around, in the way he reacts and in the way he listens. He is a skilled one, it makes her wonder how he would’ve survived in Snezhnaya where bandits like these are simple pests and where fish is so much bigger and far more monsters lurk around. Would he be a welcoming presence? Would his embrace be warm? Would he smell like fireplace back home? She wants to test it out. It takes a second for her to abruptly stop once they’re out, grab his hand tighter and yank him towards her, proving that she is not as weak as it might be seen. Once he was facing her does she let go and steps forward, wrapping her hands around the other and hiding her face in the fur of his jacket. He smells like dawn and fire, like warmth and home, but it’s not her home. “ Thank you. ” She doesn’t mean it, but it would make sense to say it in this situation. Unknown to the hero, the villain’s eyes are hollow and cold when he doesn’t see, she clings to this sense of warmth to remind herself of her own humanity. For now, she’ll think of him as a tool to remain a human, a string she’ll attach to him to not get lost in the abyss of winter’s nightmares.
“ Stay with me today... Help me. Please. ” Make herself look vulnerable and tired, make it seem as if she’d dropped her mask to showcase herself as a person, not a beast hiding within the beauty. Nay, she makes the beauty’s mask work its magic as her voice trembles. The ever-confident, smiling and seductive Sokolova does this with full understanding of what possibilities such acting can open. Mayhaps, she does not wish to admit she wants to long closer to this warmth and this light, masking it all under the guise of usage. Who knows? It depends on the hero who he’ll tug that string she attached, cutting it away or dragging her closer? It all depends on the hero’s flames that must melt the glacier that is her existence. Burn her until there is only a frozen flower left. “ Even if you have to pretend... can you be my home for tonight? ” Somehow, the deepest desire comes out with her voice’s tremble, honesty can be noticed and Zarina has to bite her lower lip to not allow such “nonsense” to come out. She must stop thinking about what ifs that will become burdensome in the future. Her goal is one and only, her life is everything but long. “ If I have no choice, then take responsibility for extending your warmth to me. ” She’s so cold, so terribly cold.
